A few questions :-)

Hi There,

I'm about to order some soap making supplies but had a few questions in relation to the recipe I'm going to be using and wondered if anyone knew the answers... or if anyone new where I can find a conversion chart as I've googled it but can't seem to find one.

1. The recipe calls for 500g of olive oil. The online store I want to buy it from sells it in mls. How many mls is the equivalent to 500g?

2. It also calls for 30g of fragrance oils. How many mls will I need?

I just want to make sure I'm ordering enough.

grams measure weight and mls measure volume, so it is kinda hard to say. why are you using mls?

The recipe calls for grams but the online stores I've found sell olive oil and fragrance oils in mls so I wasn't sure how many mls I need to order to make sure I have enough...

I'm new to this and want to make some soap for xmas pressies

Here's the recipe:

Olive Oil - 500g
Coconut Oil - 300g
Palm Oil - 200g
Lye/Sodium Hydroxide/Caustic Soda - 142g
Water - 380g / 380ml

30g Fragrance Oil (Optional)
Additives such as oatmeal or clay (optional)

does the bottle amounts that you are trying to buy also show in oz?

like for the olive oil your recipe calls for a little less that 18 oz, so if they were selling a bottle with 20 oz you would be ok, KWIM?

Unfortunately, it just shows the weight in mls / litres.

Maybe I should scrap this recipe and try another one?!

Any suggestions on a simple, creamy, good lather recipe?!

According to this chart, 500 grams of olive oil is 617 ml.

This is by no means exact or scientific but most oils that I use for soaping weigh anywhere from 7 to 8 pounds per gallon. So if you convert those to grams/ounces (weight) and mls/ounces (volume) that should get you close on what you need to order.

Actually I think you can buy more than enough then go home and weigh them for your recipe since your recipe is in grams. One thing I learned is we should measure everything in weight for better accuracy.
