I have noticed that on the label of the 50 lb. buckets of oils it says to "Melt and stir entire pail before each use". Does everyone do this? How important is it?

My PO and CO come in a 40 lb box with nothing on the box about stirring , thank the good lord :D

I read something about this but not sure if it was on this forum. Someone had posted about a tried and true recipe failing and thought the culprit was either rancid coconut or palm oil because she had scraped the bottom of the bucket. A comment was then made that when those oils are in larger quantities and set for a while, its possible that the stearic acid settles to the bottom of the container which would definitely effect the outcome of your soap. It was then recommended to either melt and stir the oil to reblend it well or in the alternative, when you get a new container to repackage the oil into smaller quantities which would help prevent the separation of stearic acid.

I bought some palm(love it) and it said the same thing, i didnt stir and melt, it was fine. I could have stirred it, cause when i got it, it was liquid, but now more solid.

I don't melt my 50lb buckets of CO, and I buy my PO in 50lb cubes - no stir.

My PO and CO containers say to stir them before each use. They are only 1 gallon (about 7#) but since we've had warm weather I do notice they are more liquid and seem to separate while sitting.

Unfortunately my laundry room is the only place I have to store them and it's also the only room in the house without AC. :(

50 lb oils

I am not sure why your container of CO said to stir. The stearic acid issue seems to be mainly with Palm Oil. I recently spent an afternoon decanting my 50 lbs of coconut 76 into smaller containers. It appears to be acting just fine. With Palm oil, you can buy the homogenized or no stir one. For now, I would just divide this big mama up into smaller pails and then you can melt each pail down in a big soup pot and stir and repour as you get to needing to use that pail. In many cultures, Palm oil is used to cook with (heck, it is in a lot of our packaged cookies and baked goods) so it is perfectly safe to use a big cooking pot to do this in. Make sure you use a big pot that leaves plenty of room for the oil and then some if you are going to do this on top of the stove....and use very low heat and keep an eye on it. I am not sure a regular crock pot would be big enough.

I melt any oil I can't easily cut into manageable containers. PO happens to be one of them.

i'm one of the complainers regarding palm oil.

i have a 5 gallon pail of "no stir" homogenized palm. i'm about 1/2 thru it and all of a sudden i have gazillions of tiny white flakes in my rtcp soaps. not in my warm process soaps, tho.

i bought the pail during the winter, so there was no chance to melt during shipping, and it's been stored in a cool room ever since.

i wonder if there's such a thing as hydrogenated palm?

anyway, i would definetly keep it stirred.
