Cute display!

Castile is slimy to me. Anyone else have the problem? I agree that it's great soap other than my particular issue with the slime. :D

Nice display! :) I bet you will love your 80% olive oil soap even more. Well, at least I do. I mean mine, that is  - I've used OO at 80% lots of times. My all-time favorite OO bar, though, is the one I make with 50% OO. It's so silky and bubbly/creamy. I love OO and use it in all but one of my formulas. I love it in cooking, too.

Let us know how you like your 80% OO bar! :)

Yes! My 100% Castile lather is slimy, too- like egg raw whites- even a whole year later! But - that's only if I use my bare hands to lather it with. When I use a face cloth to lather with or one of those nylon poufs, the lather is so different- luxuriously creamy and decadent- not like raw egg whites at all.

yep , castile is 100% OO and lye . I find that silk and sugar added , help with the slime factor as does keeping the bar totally dry between uses .

savondebilal - hope its not lye! :D :D

Oooooh, I was GOING to put all my cphp making equipment away for a few weeks until cold weather (soaping too much and not getting my yard work done)... but.... that sounds wonderful! Can anyone give me a lye amt for say 16 oz of oo (I like to start in small batches 1st). If the sugar deals with the slime, I'm IN!

Thanks everyone.

oo lala! thanks for the advice and the compliments!

hey Irish, when you do 50% OO

...what do you do with the other 50%?

The other 50% is made up of a combo of Rice Bran Oil, PKO, Coconut Oil, Castor Oil, and Cocoa Butter.

I have that same box! fixed up the same way!!! lol, cept mine has co. name on it instead of Olive Oil
Anyway, Kitn mentioned sugar possibly cutting back on the slime issue. I would have to agree. My OO soaps are not slimy and I always add sugar. I add sugar to every bar I make.

I personally add about 1 Tbs. ppo when using cocoa butter or other oils. (others may do differently)
I also use 1 Tbs. PPO of powdered sugar. You can incorporate any kind of sugar. Some use reg. sugar disolved in the lye. Honey is considered sugar. I usually don't superfat with oils anymore other than to mix up my T.D. and p.sugar.....I use just enough of the base oils or a SF'ing oil to mix them well and get all the lumps out. A small snack size baggie is perfect for mixing and smooching all the lumps out.

What benefits do you get by using a high % (like 50%) of Olive oil? What are the negatives?

For me, the main benefit is mildness.

The negatives are less bubbly lather the higher % you go, and also the colloidal gel that forms on the surface of high % OO soaps when they get wet (although some see that as a positive). This curious gel-like substance is actually due to olive oil's high % of oleic acid, which readily solubizes in wet conditions. The good news is that it hardens right back up when the soap dries out. The higher the % of olive oil, the higher the % of colloidal gel formation your soap will display when you shower or bathe with it. As for adding sugar to cut down on sliminess, you can certainly try it, but it didn't put a dent in the colloidal formation in my Castile, even when I combined it with the use of a 48% lye solution.

Some people love the colliodal gel and find that it adds a nice, creamy dimension to their soap, while others hate it because to them, the gel feels like there's a layer of raw, slimy egg whites on the surface of their soap. It's all a matter of preference, based on what kinds of textures gross you out. It really doesn't bother me all that much (because I use a facial cloth with it), but it sure bothered enough of my testers that I decided to go on a quest to formulate a Castile-type that wouldn't make certain people feel like they were getting slimed.

I made a lot of different OO soaps with varying percentages from 100% to 50% along the way in my quest to please the gel-hating people, and I kept coming back to my 50% OO formula. Everyone of my testers from tough, macho guys to girly girls all gave me good feedback on my 50% OO soap- so that's what I settled on as my main Castile-type (or Bastile) formula. It's as mild as a higher % OO soap, has silky/creamy lather with good bubblage, and best of all- the gel formation is so miniscule in my finished bars that it's a non-issue among my testers. :)
