I am thinking of trying a 100% EVOO batch. This will be my first batch, but I have some quick questions. Would you recommend this as a first batch ( i know it will take a while to trace and a while to cure) I have a stick blender, so i should be ok. I do not plan on adding any color. I am not sure about FO or EO. Would you recommend adding a scent to the soap or leave it natural?

Would 90% EVOO and %10 coconut76 be ok? Its only 21 hardness on soap calc, and INS 124?

thanks!

seems reasonable - you can use a well behaved FO if you wish but don't get fancy.

and ignore the hardness estimate - castile, after the cure of 8 weeks or more, is ROCK HARD

I love Castille as well as Bastille. 100% EVOO makes a nice white bar (Castille) and when I make my Bastille I use 75% EVOO & 25% CO.

Both are wonderful!

Lindy & Bunny, would you use a 33% lye solution for your castille & bastille soaps, & what would your superfat no. be, like maybe 5 or 6%...

I have made 100% olive oil soap. It tends to get slimy, especially if left in water. I just made one with 20% CO and 80% OO. I added peppermint and rosemary EO. I am testing this one now for sliminess!

Hey Misty - sorry for the delay in answering - I use a 30- 33% Lye solution for pretty much all my soaps.

I find that my soaps aren't slimy and that the longer/older the soap gets, the nicer it becomes and the better it lathers. It seems to take at least 5 or 6 weeks for it to really get nice.

Once it's cured it is wonderful soap and so moisturizing....

Cheers
Lindy

thanks Lindy, that's about what I usually go with 33%. But just wondering with using just olive oil you wouldn't go too high with the superfat, is that right, maybe 5%. What do you use, thanks again.....

Hi again,

I use 33% Lye discount on my Castille as well and it makes a wonderful soap. Just make sure you take it to a strong trace so it doesn't separate.

After that it will take the full 4 weeks to get to its best.

Cheers

is it better to use co with the evoo instead of just 100% evoo? would the latter of the two produce a hard bar after curing or should co be added?

I've seen everyone say that 100% EVOO soap will be a rock hard bar after 6-8wks of cure time. I know it's slow to trace and soft at first though. I've added CO and such to mine so far, since my stick blender doesn't work (brand new) and I don't want to whisk 100% OO soap to trace.. ouch. As soon as I exchange my SB though I'm gonna try a castille, myself!

Hi Wonderland,

You can do either and I like both. If I want a bar that is going to be for a baby then I use only 100% EVOO since it is the gentlest. I use Bastile (75% EVOO & 25% CO) for pretty much everything else. I play with other oils and fats, but I keep coming back to the Bastile as my personal favourite to which I will add small amounts of Castor, Sweet Almond Oil & Vitamin E oil for superfatting. JMO

Cheers
Lindy

thanks for your responses. i'll try it first with just 100% evoo. hopefully over the weekend when work settles a bit. :)

thanks Lindy, I haven't tried making Castille yet, so I shall tomorrow using a 33% lye discount & 6% superfat
