Making it today...

I just mixed up my lye water to try a batch of this soap. My husband is nuts for big lather so I am excited to try this soap.
I have extra dry and sensitive skin myself, so if it doesn't hurt or dry me out, then pretty much anyone could use it!!
We are sailors to boot, and I understand this soap will lather even in salt water, so if we like it, it would be a nice soap to keep aboard the boat.
We shall see.
I am scenting it with Bay Rum.

how much do y'all pay for coconut oil? i have been buying at the store and it is expensive here. i just paid $8 for 14 oz. because i was desperate to make soap i am venturing into other oils so that i don't have to use all of my coconut oil in one batch.

I hate it when I see what these places charge for raw mats. Phone your local Bakery Supply houses. You can get all your basic oils there for about a dollar a lb and save on freighting big containers across the country. Palm, Palm Kernal, Coconut (they usually have several kinds) Olive, all of these basic they should have. Tallow is cheaper I think I pay .50 /lb. All your sea salt, citric, baking soda, fillers, all these you can get from Bakery supply locally, or at least near to you. The exotic oils you will still have to source somewhere else. For fragrance & essential oils I buy from FPI both Canada and the States. They will send 10 free samples with any order so you can try new fragrance or eo's without the worry of buying one that you dislike. Most fragrance companies will not accept returns. Their pricing is good and except for a few fo's I have purchased that seized my soap, I'm pretty good with their quality and their pricing is good.

I decided to be brave and do 100% coconut with 20% superfat. I had to almost slap my own wrist to keep from adding a glob of shea butter at the last minute, but I wanted to keep this one pure so that I could do other batches with different additional oils (maybe 10-20%) and see how they compare. I hope the bay rum smells better in the finished soap than it did straight from the bottle. It did turn the batch a really pretty buttery yellow though. I thought it was quite nice. And compared to the 100% OO batch I did yesterday this one was so fast!! Less than 10 minutes all said and done once I added the lye. Love it.
And yes, 100% coconut soaps or variations thereof have been sold as "sailors soap" for many years because coconut oil will lather in pretty much any water, including saltwater.

I rethought the 100% idea when carebear suggested only 10% superfat to allow for removal of fishstink.Went with 15% anyhoo, and decided shea would be wasted on these guys,so thought hmm cocoabutter'll add even more to the hardness, bit of conditioning,& it's 1/2 the price of shea! lol
My bay eo is rather zealous as well!

Another question........

Since coconut oil bars get so hard, should I unmold and cut this in less than 24 hours? Just wondering if it will get too hard to cut if I wait too long.

Ok, so I made my lil' batch yesterday that didn't go as planned. I don't know that I like this, but here's a cut pic. It has WAY too much color and I don't like the M&P pieces in it. It looks odd. I sprayed them with alcohol before placing them (they were clear).

Does anyone use the higher melt-point CO (I think it's like 92 degrees or something)? I used the Lou-Ann CO from Wal-Mart. It melts readily and am curious to know if this changes over cure time or stays the same.

krissy, Walmart has LouAna coconut oil (I think it's about a 32oz container, or a tad less) and it's not expensive at all.... less than $3 last time I checked. It's refined coconut oil, just like the stuff that everyone else sells for soaping. :) I use it when I run out of my PKO.

Where do they have the coconut oil?

I can only find coconut oil at a SuperWalmart in the cooking oils section. The Louana brand I bought in a NH store is just over $5 for the 32 oz. size.

Since I don't live that close to the store, I made sure to stock up! :)

Thank-you Jude!! They are making our Walmart in to a superstore so I will make sure and check there! :)

I know, I'm quoting myself, how dumb is that? It's just that this info is follow up to what I wrote above.

I just tried the 100% coconut soap I made on June 26. It's only 2 1/2 weeks old, but I figured just a little test on my hands. OMG, I love it. It lathered like nuts and at 20% SF, that must do the trick because I am looking at the old, usually dry skin on the back of my hands and there's no sign of excessive drying.

I soaped with 38% water, because CO traces so fast, I figured less water would make it go even faster. Even at that it was 5-10 minutes all said and done.

I scented it with straight Bay Rum EO from Camden Grey. I didn't think I would care for it at first, but it has gotten much nicer with age, and now I'm thinking I need to order some more.

Thanks guys, for all the information on how to do this soap. It's a keeper!!! (I guess I'm going to have start ordering my CO by the 50# pails now.)

Oh goody! I just tested the one I made that IrishLass suggested. 70% CO and 30% Mango Butter with 15% SF. It needs more time!

But I'm glad to hear about yours. I think I'll have to try that one next!

Hello everybody! I’d like to ask you about a smell of a salt soap. Usually I make my salt soap with 60% of CO and with 75% of CO (10% SF). And every time I catch the clear smell of … a soap at my skin after use. I use different EO, but I catch the smell of a soap anyway…
With other kind of a soap I don’t get it.
Is it naturally for a salt soap, or I do something wrong?

I’m sorry for a dumb question, I’m still learning.
