Please tell me about salt bars

I think she boiled her sea water; I did not.

Please tell me about salt bars

I used Elly’s recipe, which is only 10% coconut oil: 850 g olive oil 100 g coconut oil 50 g castor oil 225 g sea water (I used water from our vacation spot in Fernandina Beach, Florida) 138 g lye No super fat, but I used 2 tsp spirulina powder dissolved in 1 1/2 T olive oil plus 1 T green...

    Soap gelled???

Me, too. I started out doing CPOP in my oven, but saw a couple of YouTube videos (can’t remember by whom) of using a heating pad and cardboard box. I now use a small insulated two-piece styrofoam cooler that I get my infusion supplies in with a little channel cut in the lip to hold the heating...

    Donating Soap

Anyone who would criticize what you’re doing isn’t worth listening to. I donate extras, less-than-perfects, rebatched, whatevers that I don’t want to keep in inventory, to either my local women’s shelter or a transitional housing facility (along with crocheted washcloths and soap scrap bags.

    Heat Infusion for Oil

Say, “It’s not for me, it’s for the baby.” Then wait for the Department of Family and Children’s Services to show up. Should be fun!

Calculated mold volume but it made too much

That’s been my experience, too. Soap batter is heavier than water, so it’s not a very precise measurement.

    Issue with Soap Seizing

I’ve only had the one experience with putting the M&P on top, so I am loath to offer advice. I would be concerned that since your CP has started curing, the M&P layer might not stick. I did spray the top of mine with rubbing alcohol before putting the M&P on; you might want to score the top...

    Soap on a stick!

Math is not my strong suit, either (if I add up a column of numbers I get multiple answers; I quit when I get the same number twice), but I still ALWAYS use a soap calculator (I use Soapcalc), and a regular calculator since I once made a batch of lye-heavy soap and had to throw the whole thing...

Cleaning up colorants after making soap

I use the stainless condiment cups, too. Got them from a restaurant supply company and they work just great. I’d add that Dawn spray wash is a wonderful degreaser and gets the leftover oil out quite nicely.

    Issue with Soap Seizing

The top has a thin layer of orange M&P that I had left over from another project. A happy coincidence!

    Issue with Soap Seizing

I found a slightly used salad shooter on line and let the seized soap dry out a couple of days before shredding. It worked great.

    Issue with Soap Seizing

Was pleased with my latest rebatch of seized soap. Orange cranberry. It smells great! Still not pretty.

First attempt with the Ciaglia Method

    Exactly. I’m confused, too.

    Ocean water soaps

I used sea water from northeastern Florida, boiled it first, and had absolutely no issues.

    Issue with Soap Seizing

I haven’t had it long, a couple months, but don’t know how old it was before that. I ordered it off the world wide internets, but I don’t think it was from one of the known good suppliers. It was subjected to some fairly warm temps for a couple of weeks until I moved it. Probably a combination...

    Issue with Soap Seizing

Has anyone experienced your CP soap seizing due to palm oil? I have used the Royalty soap recipe for several batches with no problems, but recently changed to a different brand of palm oil and my last 4-5 batches have all gone to trace immediately and I've ended up with soap on a stick. I can't...

    Soap workshop frustration

No good deed goes unpunished. I’m sorry for your experience with this tacky organization. I had something a bit similar happen, although certainly not to your extent. I volunteered to donate commemorative soaps for a ceremony at my church, mainly to try a bespoke order and generate some...

Please tell me about salt bars

I made my salt bars using the recipe from Becky Zepeda in the May/June issue of Willow and Sage. 84% coconut oil 8% almond oil 8% cocoa butter Water to lye ratio was 1.2 to 1 Sea salt was about 44% of the weight of the oils, and added at trace. I used round and oval cavity molds and the soap...

What soapy thing have you done today?

Thanks, I will check it out. The ph was somewhere between 8-9 color-wise, but most of my test strip experience has been with pool water, not soap.

Where did you learn to soap?

I’d been doing M&P for years but was afraid to to cold process, but I made a New Year’s resolution this year to try it. I watched about a bazillion YouTube videos, mainly Lisa from I Dream in Soap, Holly, from Holly’s Soapmaking, and Elly from Elly’s Everyday Soapmaking. I also bought a couple...
