    What's this on my soap!

Thank you, everyone, for this posting. I made 100% shea butter soap and this issue was perplexing me to no end. Please see these pictures of what I believe to be fat bloom. This is a waxy-feeling coating on all sides of the soap, including cut sides, and does not seem like soda ash to me. I...

    unsaponifiables in oils

Hello everyone - I am enjoying this discussion. This year I made 100% shea butter soap and I noticed that the colors in the soap are not as vibrant as in other soaps (such as olive oil or coconut oil soaps), no matter the soaping temperature. In the picture, notice the muted colors and steric...

Shower Lotion Bar Tests and recipes

I decided to improve on the recipe by making two different batches. I lowered the amount of exfoliant and tried Cupuacu butter instead of shea butter and trying mango butter instead of shea butter: Recipe #3: 39% - Cocoa Butter – 454 g 39% - Cupuacu Butter – 454 g 20% - Almond Flour – 227 g (8...

    Keep Getting Stearic Spots! Help!

@pjknight, soap does not need to gel necessarily. There are reasons to force gel or not to. Here are some excellent articles: https://www.brambleberry.com/tips-and-tricks/soap/art0235-what-is-gel-phase.html#:~:text=If%20your%20recipe%20does%20contain,we%20recommend%20skipping%20gel%20phase...

    Why the brittle edges?

Thank you, everyone! This is very helpful. I make soap in our cold garage and have been having this problem for a while. Now I know that after pouring into molds, I need to put the soap in a preheated oven and keep it warm for a while.

    Keep Getting Stearic Spots! Help!

Hello there, @merg_a ! I hope this response is not too late, and I hope this helps. 1. I ran your recipe through Soap Calc and you have ~10% palmitic and ~6% steric acid. Both of these are culprits of steric acid spots. These two are dominant components of hard oils and they tend to...
