are there any general guidelines about adding glycerin to CP soaps? i'd like to try adding some to my shaving soap recipe to aid in lather production and increase moisturizing. any help would be appreciated! thanks.

    Fist batch in the mold!!

hey michael, congratulations, it's all downhill from here! i just made a recipe not all too different from the one you did, all the same oils just slightly different percentages, it came out of the mold soft but it's hardening up nicely over the first week. let us know how it turned out.

    weird palm oil

is the insulation of the batch what causes the gelling? and seriously about the refrigerator?

    weird palm oil

i think my red veins are actually gelling, but i just wanted to make sure it was kosher to use this type of palm oil for soap.

    weird palm oil

hey all, the only palm oil i've been able to find locally is very red/orange and looks like there's some 'stuff' in there. i used it successfully in a recipe a while back in small proportion and used it again this weekend with a greater percentage and the soap seems like it has pools of oil on...

    ? about waxes

if you're interested, i believe you can mix "hard" microcrystalline wax with regular paraffin to create a hurricane-like wax. i can't remember the proportions off hand but if you wish to know, say so and I'll track down the numbers again.

    wood wicks

they actually burn really well. haven't had to trim the wick, no soot, no ash. as far as the scent, i haven't paid enough attention. i'll have to check the next time we burn one. i THINK they're made in the USA. may be the use of soy since they're a midwestern thing, dunno about that. i'm sure...

    wood wicks

they're pretty popular in the midwest and cost accordingly. mainly, i'm trying to figure out a way to make them myself so my wife won't buy anymore! they do look kinda like the thickness of popsicle sticks... interesting.

    wood wicks

has anyone tried making these? if so, have you found a good thickness/type of wood or a good treatment to keep it burning?

    making wax blend

thanks for the replies. that was the site i ended up on for formulations, it's a good site. the wax i have is from peak candle in denver (where i used to live). it's the straight paraffin (IGI 1343A). thanks for the info on why paraffin is avoided for containers. the ones i made last night...

    making wax blend

interesting... i had heard that straight paraffin was not intended for containers. but who knows, all the info i've found seems to be all over the place. i'll see how the paraffin/vybar mixture works out and experiment further from there. good point about the bees in containers, I think i'll...

    making wax blend

well, i did some intensive internet research and found a few wax formulas (not much info available) and the one i tried was 1# of paraffin; 1 tsp. of vybar. next time around i may try a 50/50 blend of paraffin and bees with the vybar added in. i'll let you know how these burn. i'd still like...

    making wax blend

hey all, my wife and i are interested in making some candles and i've got an enormous block of paraffin wax and some bees wax from an old project to work with. we'd like to make some container candles but everything i read says you need a container wax or to make a blend. they stop short of...

    question after de-molding

that makes plenty of sense. especially considering that i had a bunch of insulation. thanks!

    rosemary

sorry, i made a typo, it's a mortar, not mortal... oops!

    question after de-molding

thanks for the response. what exactly should i do differently to avoid partial gel? is it too little or too much blending or something?

    question after de-molding

i demolded a batch of soap this afternoon and the outside looks fairly uniform in color but the inside almost looks swirled. kinda looks like some has cured and some hasn't. is this normal? i've had this happen before in a PVC round mold. the outside of the circles was good and the inside...

    rosemary

i just made a batch last night with ground rosemary. i used a mortal and pestle like the previous poster and felt it first to make sure it didn't feel sharp before i mixed it in. i read somewhere that whole leaves will scratch you.
