    Wah Happen? CHEM assitance needed

It's been a couple days and my soap has a bit of a rubber texture to it (don't ask about hubs jokes on rubber soap). I have no idea what I did to make that happen but, I think it's time to start over and get it right next time.:shifty: Also, I noticed I didn't melt it completely and there are...

Thanks, Dennis! I tried to save one but it defaulted to the website so, now I know to save as a pdf for referencing. Cool! I'm going to try my recipe again... only with the correct quantities. hehe. I liked how it looked the first time.

Well, it ain't pretty anymore! LOL It looks like yellow Pahoehoe lava to me. Hubs was whining about not getting any soap on a rope (making fun of me, nicely of course) so I poked a piece of hemp in one corner for him. It's pretty soft yet, hope it gets hard. When washing out the crock it suds...

It's good for rebatch practice. :) I added some goat milk and water with the 60g of OO and its cooking... almost ready to pour. Wondering if the cooking process will make it brown because of the milk. I'll find out! hehe

Here's a picture just before I chopped it up for the crock pot.

I'm really confused too. I put in the calculations to the SoapCalc from the book I got them from (very handy that I can enter the ounces and get the grams too) and as far as I can tell I was off by 60g oil. Also, the calculator sometimes warns me of the higher than 40% lye concentrations and...

Ok, it'll be a good opportunity to learn to rebatch. I've cut it up so I can shred it better and it's super soft and mushy, like butter. The shredding is going to be messy. Could I just chop it up into small cubes?

I'm getting ready to rebatch and I try the zap test and I'm not getting the zap. Since I've never done the zap test I don't exactly know what to expect so, I tried it on my first batch (a month old now) and it was the same. No "zap". Do you think I got lucky and the lye completely reacted?

Thank you all for the help. I'm one of those learners who gets more out of making a mistake. I've read plenty but, now that I have to rebatch because of a screw up it makes much more sense. I've had a bunch of chemistry but, it's been a while. This is FUN!! I'll rebatch and post my results...

Thank you, DeeAnna! I guess it's time to learn how to rebatch  I poked around the lye calculator and discovered ounces to grams feature and that should fix any bad math in the future. I'm pretty sure I botched the conversion. I'm glad I can rebatch it and not lose all that oil. :-D

"Natural Soap Making", checked it out from the library. I'll double check my numbers. I will definitely be putting all my future recipes in a soap calculator. What happens now, do I have to junk this batch? Will it saponify?

It was supposed to be 5% SF but, my overage blew that out. I'm very new to soap making and this was my 3rd batch. My first two went fine so I wanted to brave goat milk as 100% of my liquid. Upon reflection, I converted the first two batches to grams also. Recipe: 700g Olive Oil 420g Coconut...

So I'm using hubs kitchen scale and it doesn't weigh in pounds or ounces but grams. So I convert all my weights to grams and proceed... still waiting to see if I totally munched this batch (batch #3) cause stuff happened that didn't happen the first 2 times. And yes, I changed the recipe and...

    When to add?

Are there different benefits to adding milk with the oil or as 100% of my liquids? I guess, I'm curious if there is a difference in benefits related to when you add it?

    When to add?

I'm super new to CP soapmaking (I've made 2 batches). I've been reading lots and it seems like some of the processes are personal preference. I've tried the "search" feature and I'm having a hard time finding threads that are specific to my question so... I'll keep it specific and ask...

    Hey, from Washington

I'm a new soap maker... as in I've made two batches so far and of course I'm hooked. Along with being new I have a billion questions. I've browsed a bit and will pop a question now and then. I'm a bit of a purist (I think, anyway) and I like natural soaps that look earthy. I also have goats...
