    Sugar Promotes Mold Growth?

Earlene, my thoughts exactly. I think a good example of how small amounts of sugar feed rather than inhibit would be how people add sugar to the water used for hydrating yeast for making bread. A little bit of sugar helps get the yeast nice and active while a lot of sugar in the water is bad for...

    Spider silk instead of Tussah?

Definitely! I found another thread in which the same member (Ancel) gave a little more detail, here.

    Spider silk instead of Tussah?

Would it possibly be as good? I've never used or tried a silk soap but so many soapers seem to love it. A search showed that one forum member uses spider silk but not how it compared. There's no way it would be me doing the collecting. Maybe not even the handling and adding the silk to lye...

Favorite vanilla fragrances from Nature's Garden?

Thanks. I'll probably just get that one but I'm so curious about the others as well. I did see that thread and there were a few votes for Vanilla Bean but it was tough to sift through and find opinions about other NG vanillas, if there were any. There were a few comments that shared scent names...

Favorite vanilla fragrances from Nature's Garden?

I've been planning another fragrance oil order from ND and they have sooo many different vanilla type scents! What are some of your favorites? Have you gotten to do a comparison between, for instance, Vanilla Bean, V Extract, and V Spectacular? I'm also curious about V Silk but the description...

Can I use activated charcoal made for fish tanks?

Awesome. Thanks for the tips! What about using a food processor? No coffee grinder anymore. I'm thinking that if any pieces are as big as poppy seeds then they would be scratchy in a bad way. Hope my sieve is fine enough.

    Brioche in 5

Can I use activated charcoal made for fish tanks?

I have a bunch of it and no fish at the moment. Of course it will have to be ground up somehow, but I think it's the same stuff. Would grinding with a mortar and pestle get it fine enough? Is it okay for it to be a little "exfoliating" or does it have to be like a mica dust?

    Dog soap

Woah! Didn't know that about chamomile. And it's super neat that you're doing a shampoo for Sphinx cats. Do they need to be bathed really or would that only be used if they got into some mud or for a show?

    Dog soap

I keep meaning to search for a dog soap recipe but since you asked... I want to know this, too! Also wondering, is soap the right thing for animal fur or would it be better to look into making a syndet bar?

    Face Scrub

I would really like to know your face scrub recipe. I make make tiny amounts of perishable scrubs once in a while but it would be great to have one that lasts for a bit longer! Edit: I forgot I had this page open on the desktop for so long. lol. Thank you for sharing! Sounds like it smells...

oops.. soap goes in shower AFTER cure!

I made my third batch of soap yesterday. Didn't have a good place to put it and had to go take care of some other stuff. My DH suggested I put it in the bath tub with the curtain closed for the time being. Fast forward to that evening. He turned on the shower without opening the curtain...

    I just made soap!

This is the one I've been using for a while. Sliced it in half early on. The orange spots have either always been there or it's been a few weeks since they appeared. There aren't especially soft parts but that darker orange streak, center, does feel tacky.

    I just made soap!

earlene, it seems like every year I get a case of "I'll know what it is" having to do with seed starting. Definitely been there! Update on the soap: Using it is great. Smells great. The cubes all hardened nicely. Dents if dropped so not rock hard but good enough. One problem: orange spots...

    Lotion making research phase

Edit: I got interrupted mid-writing this and missed the two replies above. Oops.. Thanks all! I have read a few of Swift Crafty Monkey's posts and they are really neat and informative. I keep going down the rabbit hole there, never reading what I meant to search for. I'll look into Soap...

    Lotion making research phase

I'm so overwhelmed! *breathe* Okay... I actually read a lot and then my brain shut off somewhere in the bio-chem-jargon in an article about different kinds of preservatives. There's a wonderful milk lotion tutorial on this forum that I would very much like to try. It calls for emulsifying wax...

    Heavens, they're tasty!

Do you have to add a mesophilic culture to make your own buttermilk? Just starting to branch out besides kefir and I'm kinda put-off that most cultures aren't self-sustaining. I don't want to have to keep buying them, but also I didn't want to pay the inflated shipping for the reusable kind...

    Holi Colors for Bath Bomb?

Depends on their ingredients. Even if they say "non-toxic," try to find out what dyes are used to color the cornstarch and see if they might also be in listed bath bomb ingredients. Holi powders often stain if they get wet, soo... Do a test batch.

    Shampoo Bar - Thanks Lindy!!

I'm in no way an expert, but my guess is that since skin is still alive and hair is not, it's best not to consider them in the same category. For one, their structure is visibly different. Close-up, hair looks kind of scaly. I think when hair is very damaged then those scales stick up and don't...
