Too hot or not hot enough??

Thanks, Judy. Good points. I hadn't factored in the sugar in the beer. And I was thinking the same thing - about looking at the soap to see if it's gelling. I think next time I'll keep a close eye on the temps! With every new thing I introduce (new mold, different material, different batch...

Too hot or not hot enough??

Hi, all! You know, when I first started making soap, I made every kind you can think of - and lots of intricate complicated formulas. I made them all in empty milk cartons and every batch came out perfect. Seriously. Since I've started using nice molds (everything from HDPE to nice wood...

    Lotion Making

Definitely! I think the best source out there is Swift's bog - http://swiftcraftymonkey.blogspot.com/. She has a "Lotion Making 101" type of manual. Here's the link... http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1020026/introductiontolotionmakingthingie.pdf.

newbie here need to clarify body cream recipe

I highly recommend Swift's site as well. That link will help you understand the lotion making process better. You really want to read that carefully, seriously. Again, don't take my word for it - learn the info in that link. Having said that, here's a summary: Basically, you'll want to...

    Bath salts smell stinky :-(

Wow - that is so helpful! Thank you all so much for the reply. I guess a milk bath maybe needs to be its own thing - separate from bath salts. Or at least, for sure separate from Dead Sea Salts. Thanks again.

    Bath salts smell stinky :-(

I made this bath salt recipe and within a couple of weeks, it started to smell fishy. Weird. I wonder if it's the Goat's Milk. I don't have much experience with bath salts, so I'm not sure. Here's the recipe I used: 1/2 Cup (46.5 g) colloidal oatmeal 2 scoops (31.8g) powdered goat milk 1...

How to figure how much oil for mold.

Just tried this calculation over the weekend - I had a new large mold and wasn't sure how much soap to make. Anyhow, it was kind of close, but did not make enough soap to fill my log mold to the desired height. I even added 4 oz of oils just for good measure (it's a 22 inch log mold). I think...

    Bath Oil Separation

I see at lease 2 layers. Even if there are only 2 layers, they are each fairly large, so I know it's not the FO. I think I also see a 3rd small layer at the very top, so that's why I say that I'm pretty sure the FO separated out as well. Good idea about doing a little experiment, though.

    Bath Oil Separation

It's hard to tell whether the FO is separating out. I think it is. For sure, the base oils separate from each other. That's an excellent point about molecular weight. Maybe I'll do some research on that and see if oils with a more closely aligned molecular weight would mix better. Of course...

    Bath Oil Separation

Thanks for the tips! One other thing I thought about is that I didn't heat this mixture up. Would that have helped to keep the oils from separating, I wonder?

    Who orders from WSP? Opinions?

I agree with a lot of posters here. I have used them a lot because their products are really high quality and I don't order giant quantities of any one item. Their packaging prices, in particular, are good - when you order in quantities of 40-something. That cuts the cost just about in half...

    Bath Oil Separation

Bump.... Hi, All! I've missed you. I know that sounds strange, but it's sincerely true! There was a time when I was on here all the time. I've been away from the boards for a while now (just exhausted and stressed from my job - which, incidentally, I plan to quit in the spring!!). Well, I"m...

    tiger balm recipes?

I haven't made this, so I don't have any recipes, but here's a recent thread that is related - http://soapmakingforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=26332&highlight=tiger. Maybe some of the responders there have recipes to post??

    I've lost my virginity bubble!

Congrats and welcome!! I use between .5 and .8 oz of FO per pound of oils (same for EOs). There's a lot of room for variation there, since different ones will have different strengths/staying power, etc. Generally .8 oz PPO has worked for the majority of scents I've used.

    Closest Substitute for Cocamide DEA?

Anyone have any thoughts on the closest substitute for Cocamide DEA? I want to try those "Lush" type bubble bars discussed in a recent thread. I though I had every ingredient known to mankind, but for some reason, I never got around to ordering Cocamide DEA. I have tons of other surfactants...

    For the last time!

I know spices are notorious for causing problems. However, I've made a couple of spicy things and they didn't give me problems (specifically WSP's "Perfect Pumpkin" (smells heavenly - just like pumpkin pie) and WSP's "Cozy Christmas" (smells just like eggnong).

Yep - seems to be down. God help us all.

ummm what the heck happened to the board?

I like the new look - and the old one. I'm good with it either way, but I do have a question. When I go to www.soapmakingforum.com and try to click on "Enter Forum", a dialog box opens up and says it doesn't know how to open the file. Is anyone else having that problem if they try to enter the...

    Homemade sea mud

Personally, I wouldn't sell it to anyone, for all the reasons mentioned by others, but if you like it for yourself and it hasn't harmed you yet, I say use it to your heart's content! I'd love to go wade in a natural sea mud bath!!
