    Coloring your soap

I first off bought dropper colors and chucked them for oxides (Amazon). Pretty but they bled. I’ll keep them for sometime. Now buy from BB or Mad Mica (to eliminate “issues”. Now learning pitfalls of fragrances, so sticking to BB for now because you can know each FO’s behavior in CP. i’ve Got...

    Custom silicone molds?

Oh!! I don’t know how to do that! But I’d like to learn.

    Custom silicone molds?

Does anyone know of someone who makes custom silicone/wood soap molds? I like my bars to be 3”x 3” x 1”. I find that quart milk cartons hold about 1 1/2 lbs of soap batter with bars that size. Fits right in my hand. The milk cartons work, but I would like a permanent mold. I guess check Etsy??

    Learning More the Hard Way

Accidental lessons today. So, trying to be oh so perfect with my soap today, I split off my batter and mixed the colors. Batter nice and thin. I usually get thick batter fast. Hmm. Realized that I had forgotten to add the sodium lactate to the lye water so I quickly split it among my colors...

    Lavander soap

Oooo Will go to that site at once! Now I have my evening planned!! I like the idea of “Proprietary Blend”— There is good sense in that. A friend is asking for Lavender/mint. Afraid I might go to heavy on the mint, I’m thinking of making little green leaf (mint) embeds, studded in the lavender...

    Lavander soap

Rats, I have a friend who wants Lavender/mint, another who wants Lavender/rosemary, another who wants just Lavender. Why oh why did I ask them??

    Learning the hard

My ugly duckling Neem soap surprised me. Besides not being the prettiest soap and having a stupid smell, it turns out to be the best performing soap so far!!!!! I will definitely make more. Once again, beauty comes from inside!

    Are butters effective in soap?

I’m a newbie too. I spend a lot of time with the lye calculator and my notes, figuring out new recipes and learning how different oils interact. I’ve not limited myself to cheaper oils. But I don’t sell. I’m coming up with some standard combos that my F&F like. Coconut oil is a basic. The...

To Bevel or Not to Bevel

I’m just lucky if my soaps work to worry about bevelling, and I don’t sell. But always learning. We have Trader Joe’s in CA, and we’ve used their soap for years — I prefer my own now, but their mild soap was fine for a long time. My daughter tipped me off about the bars. They have one edge...

    Lilac soap

P&J is a brand off of Amazon. I have since come to my senses. Fortunately small bottles. But it seems to be ok but it’s a crap shoot about how it will behave. Anyway, I had been thinking of lilac/lavender. Glad people like it.

    Lilac soap

Fluid lines reflect nature. But, I watched the video from Royalty Soap on rainbow straight line layer soap: her technique was mixing one color at a time to slow thickening by colors sitting. That let the bottom layer go on to thickening and the new layer being more fluid to float on top. Also...

    Another question about Lye amount

Oh!! I get it! Thanks! Great explanation!

    Another question about Lye amount

Also, why do some people swear by 33% water/oils? Seems that if lye is a constant based on saponification values, that water:lye is more precise, although I guess working time would be something to consider depending on design. Am I thinking clearly on this? I ask because I finally got the...

    Another question about Lye amount

Every morning I settle with my coffee to learn soaping—So fun to follow activities! It helps a lot to clarify these things, even if again! Thank you! Makes sense. What water:lye ratio do you use? And is there any real reason to change it?

    Lilac soap

How did it discolor—what color did it turn to? My lilac is P & J. No telling what it will do—thrilling to handle on the spot sudden surprises!!

    Lilac soap

It’s really pretty though—fresh color! May I ask how the lilac behaved in the batter? Would it blend with lavender do you think?

    Another question about Lye amount

Would someone explain, as to a child , about what are the consequences of different lye amounts. I made a soap, for example, with lye:water at 2.5:1, and some at 33%. How does the lye amount affect the product? Does less water matter? Are there cases where less or more water is needed? Seems...

    Learning More the Hard Way

What do you think about using Lavender EO with a couple of drops of peppermint EO? Will this be a problem with acceleration do you think?
