What is your 'Go To' all around recipe?

I think too you should look at the cost of your oils. Shea butter tends to be on the pricey side. If you're thinking of selling in the future (not just to friends) you're going to either buy in such huge quantities to bring down the cost of Shea or find another recipe. If I were you, I'd drop...

    Another disadvantage for a Newbie

I give my bars a test run WAY before the 4 week cure time. I just cut a 1/4 chunk out of one, and keep cutting chunks out of it until the batch is ready. I'm not sure of the sticky feeling though. Do you have hard water?

When to add EOs and/or SF to LS?

I'm planning on trying LS (finally have all the ingredients), and going to try the CP method a la Grayce in this post http://www.soapmakingforum.com/showpost.php?p=427145&postcount=18 Now, I've looked all over and can't seem to find an answer to the question of when do I add EOs to my LS? After...

What soapy thing have you done today?

awesome Jules! always great to narrow stuff down. I got my KOH! I'm going to a new neighbourhood today to see if I can find some cheap coconut oil. (don't want to practice on the pricey stuff). the plan is to make some LS paste a la Grayce's method, and have some dish soap (ran out of...

How long for GM milk soap to gel?

did it gel?? you'll have to play around with outside temp and gelling of the soap. there was one recipe that i was using that would gel with a small crack on top. then i figured to put the mold in the fridge first, and pour batter into a cold mold, and i got perfect gel. but then other...

How long for GM milk soap to gel?

I like gelled soap, and most soaps I make are goats milk soaps. mine has taken a few hours to gel. just wrap it, and leave it for hours. don't uncover or else it'll cool down.

I never knew this would happen...

I'm really sensitive to scents. EOs are super concentrated. if I'm around them for a while, they irritate the glands in my neck, so I get what you mean. maybe use less and see what happens? 2mL in a bucket of water seems a lot to me. when I'm cleaning I just drip like 10-15 drips in the...

    How are commercial soaps scented?

with commercial soaps, they are able to purchase supplies in BULK. that's how they save the money. they're probably buying direct from supplier and not even have a wholesaler as the go-between. the scent used may not even be of good quality... where's it made? (I'm guessing made in China)...

Need to vent about accurate labeling & customer service

that sucks, but unfortunately, not unheard of. best you can do is no longer use their soaps. hope your arms are no longer itchy.

    Botanical extracts

There's a video on Soaping101 which goes a little into what to put and how to infuse into your soaping oils. I think it's the shampoo bar video. It would answer your question. Tincture can be an idea, but most are either alcohol or vinegar based. Some can be glycerine, but I can't be sure the...

What soapy thing have you done today?

it's going on 3 months since I've made soap. the itch has gotten really bad. thankfully, I've ordered most of the supplies that I'm missing (except for a mold....), so next week I should be able to make an all lard utility soap, so it doesn't have to be pretty. I also ordered some KOH, and...

did you check the battery on the scale? I found when mine did funny things it was b/c the batteries were low. hope it works out for you!

    breast milk soap

I've made some for a friend and her baby a while back. I don't think she used it on the baby yet...she said she's been hoarding it for herself. lol. I've used it too (I always use what I make), and it's quite nice.

Interesting article about the demise of soap bars

I always hated liquid body detergent (I'm refusing to call that stuff soap....). I much prefer bar soap, especially my own (but I'm not biased. hehe)

    Fhs?

also ACV rinse, but if you don't like the smell, lemon rinse is great too. it took me at least two months to get over the FHS, but I was also training my hair to not need washing as frequently. the acid really helped soften everything. now, I use my shampoo bar 3 times a week and my hair...
