1st timer with 30 days to make soap presents..need a recipe!

Thanks, I'd like to make it from scratch though. Im pretty sure i can pull this off if i do a relatively basic recipe. At least i hope considering i do chemistry at work every day! I'm going to cure it for 2-4 weeks and test it, if it's not good enough it won't be gifted though. I found...

Food grade lye vs technical lye

Food grade lye has tighter restrictions on things like heavy metals such as lead than technical grade does. That's why I'd be worried about using tech grade..

    Never made soap before

Food grade lye has different restrictions on how much can be in the chemical, like heavy metals such as lead.. Tech grade has probably looser requirements. That's why I'm kind of leaning towards food grade. I did a search and it seems not many people have even heard of food grade! At...

Ok, thanks, I'll have to decide on that. It's not so much about performance, I'm sure it's fine, more like heavy metals and that kind of stuff.

    Soap looks frosted on top..WHY?

Could you just cover any exposed soap surface with wax paper or something? I thought it was the moisture in the air contacting the surface that had something to do with this problem.

Trace - time, temperature and other factors

The crockpot tutorials I see say to mix until trace, and then turn the heat off and wait until it gels. I thought the gelling part was necessary and is a sign of saponificaiton completing. How can you get away without gelling?

Cool, that makes me feel better. I dont mean to nitpick but i still am not sure about where to get lye. Miller's site provided this link which seems to recommend getting certified/pure lye as opposed to using draincleaning lye: http://candleandsoap.about.com/od/coldp ... ources.htm...

Going to make soap for the first time EVORRRRRrrrrrrr

Thanks, I want to get that but I feel like there must be a difference between food grade NaOH and draino-NaOH. Is there anything out there to assuage my concerns on that one?

Going to make soap for the first time EVORRRRRrrrrrrr

Cool, thanks, I plan on taking pictures. What I wonder is - does the lye at Ace Hardware match up to the certified-lye material? I wouldn't want the Ace Hardware material to have trace amounts of heavy metals or anything like that. The soap calculator looks pretty cool.

    Never made soap before

Hey, thanks! We'll be moving in 4 weeks so won't be able to hold on to a lot, or let it cure for that long. I was hoping a crock pot process would work if it was cured for 2-4 weeks. I dont think we want to do melt and pour, we want to do it all on our own :)

Going to make soap for the first time EVORRRRRrrrrrrr

We got the 8 dollar crockpot Probably going to order some NaOH from certified-lye.com? Hand mixer should be easy to get, it doesn't have to be a stick mixer, right? [Edit: Answered here: http://millersoap.com/SoapFAQs.html#8 ] I think we understand the basics of all of this. There were...
