Paper bag material for packaging? Eco-Friendly packaging..

Cool. I like the look of that stuff. What I'm thinking is use the brown paper bag material for the soap bar... Then, for the ribbon, I could use green-colored paper bag material. I'm looking at a paper wholefoods bag and it is colored green. Maybe I could cut out some 'ribbon' and use a...

Paper bag material for packaging? Eco-Friendly packaging..

Cool, that sounds like a great way to store a lot of soap :) For the individual ones (making gifts out of soap bars over here), I love the idea of paper bag cutouts to wrap in. The next step is to find some biodegradable material to reuse to turn into some kind of 'string' to wrap the...

Paper bag material for packaging? Eco-Friendly packaging..

I've tried to search for the basics of packaging for soap. It seems like the main priority is breathability & moisture reduction. So I'm thinking of reusing some old paper bags that have been lying around. Biodegradeability & avoidance of plastics/inks/buying new material/etc is key...

1st timer with 30 days to make soap presents..need a recipe!

Didn't add honey in the end, but the soap came out really well. It's bubbly, lathery, cleans well, and doesn't seem to dry the hands. Added 2x the oatmeal that the recipe called for. I'm deeming it a masterpiece until further notice =P Smells nice and pepperminty at 3% of oils of...

For soap nooks like myself, what have you or anyone else learned about soap making that you would pass on to others?

Going to make soap for the first time EVORRRRRrrrrrrr

This is about 30min into cooking after trace: After full gel (an hour) we started stirring it: Then it was left around 100-110F for another 1 hour 20mins. During that time it was stirred occasionally. So, a total of 2 hours 20min cooking. This seemed like overkill, but we wanted to...

Going to make soap for the first time EVORRRRRrrrrrrr

Ok, so after about 1 hour it's completely gelled. Stirred it up and it looks pretty good but going to let it go a little longer just incase. I have an urge to add more oatmeal at this point - 1/4 cup oatmeal to the 32oz oil didn't seem to amount to as much as I had thought it would be. Hmmmm

Nice, thanks for the info. We just checked the temp of the outside edge of the gel - it was 185F!! I had put water in the crockpot on low and measured the temp which maxed at 140F, but forgot to take into account the reaction between the lye water and the oils, which probably jacked up the...

Going to make soap for the first time EVORRRRRrrrrrrr

SOAPING IS UNDER WAY!!! We added the Almond Oil, Oatmeal, and Essential Mint Oil at trace (skipped the honey) like the recipe called for. It took a good amount of mixing to incorporate all that stuff at trace so it must be even more difficult if you were to do it after gelling. Took...

Got all the oil. Got the coconut oil by Spectrum from Whole Foods. I don't know if it's 76 deg, 96 deg, or fractionated though. Any ideas? Edit: It's 72 deg (bottom of the page FAQ) http://www.spectrumorganics.com/?id=15#j197

Cool, thanks for all the help everyone. The holdup now is that nobody around has Palm oil - not Costco, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Stop n Shop, Walmart, Target, or Bed Bath & Beyond...I guess that leaves Sam's Club (no membership there) and the internet (not enough time to wait), So it...

    Questions regarding Hot processed soap-making

I'm confused about separation and it's place in hot process. Is it normal for things to separate? At what stage does this happen? What does it look like? What do you do if you see separation?

Going to make soap for the first time EVORRRRRrrrrrrr

At work we have food grade NaOH and on it are minimum stated thresholds for % heavy metals such as lead so I can only assume that technical grade has more heavy metals due to looser controls on that. Got neem a while ago bc I didnt want to use conventional or toxic pesticides. It's expensive...
