    Introducing...

@Zany_in_CO Hi Zany! Yes, the swirls did come out nice, didn't they! I just hope they don't all turn dark brown and obscure the swirling. Yes, it has been asked before, "What are you going to do with all that soap??" Well... I have three storage units that still each have room in them...

    Introducing...

After the cut... At this point the brown is very superficial, but I think we need to give the air some time to do its dirty work. You can see the brown on two of the bars below. Again, you can see the brown on this highlighted bar.

    Introducing...

Strange goings-on The soap is still in the mold. The cut is planned for a few minutes from now. I took the cover off the mold this morning and noticed a substantial oval of brown developed/developing in the slab. I have some pics below. I don't know for sure if gel happened in this batch...

    Introducing...

Vanilla Bean Just poured a vanilla batter using a homemade VCS. It was a mix of 30% sodium metabisulfite and 70% distilled water. It seems to have come out really well! I'm noticing that deciding when to pour is crucial. Lately I've been pouring when the batter is just crossing over from...

    And another one!

Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep... Some pictures after the cut: I've tried multi colored ITPs and they have come out very well! As for adding another technique, I've been browsing the net on the matter and every technique seems to need quite a long time before the batter traces. All...

    ZCS vs. VCS update

Please don't hate me because I am stupid! I know many of you have been so patient with me. But no one has made it so clear as to say: John, you take this much of this and add it to this much of that. And then add this much of this. Mix well. A kind of zcvs for dummies

    ZCS vs. VCS update

Can someone please be kind enough to comment (simply) on this? I want to make 32 fluid ounces of metabisulfate solution. 32 fl. ounces of water is 946 grams. 70 percent of the solution will be distilled water which is 662 grams. 30 percent of the solution will be metabisulfate which is 284...

    And another one!

It's very pretty .,. But, I was hoping for a darker purple. It kind of looks like my lavender batch. I like to impress people by knowing my soap bars by sight alone. (I have like 20 kinds.)

    ZCS vs. VCS update

Looks great to me, Todd! Tell me ... Did you subtract water from your lye solution to make up for the water of the ZCS?

    And another one!

FO is Black Raspberry Vanilla from Nurture Soap. Accent color is a mix of Magic Violet, Light Blue Pigment, and Black Lustre. Poured at light trace. The scent is NICE! Despite the name of the FO, there is no vanillin in it. Some pics right after the pour. (More will follow after the cut.)

    ZCS vs. VCS update

Hi Todd! Good luck with your knee! So, are you tempted to say that I could make a vanillin soap using just metabisulfate and I would be alright? What would be your recipe be if the thiosulfite were left out? (Also, if you use ounces to measure, could you specify fluid ounces verses weight...

    Cleaning up!

My computer program, SoapMaker 3.0, says I have 506 bars of soap around the house. With so much soap, I am a regular Santa Claus. I'm always handing out a bar here or there. Also, if someone wants to buy a bunch, they always get a very good deal. Still, my goal is to at least have my hobby...

@ResolvableOwl Well! I'm glad we got THAT cleared up! LOL! ;)

    Embracing the Brown

Ok, here's what I got based on Gecko's percentages: I want to make 28 fluid ounces of the stuff. That is 828 grams. 828 x 0.77 = 637.60 grams of water. 828 x 0.23 = 190.45 grams of metabisulfate. The recipe says to use 9.05 fl. ounces of FO which is 268 grams. Since it is a 1:1...

    Embracing the Brown

    I like that idea!

    Embracing the Brown

Pardon me for not letting go of this bone, but when you are talking "ounces" I assume you are talking fluid ounces? How does one measure out 24.6 fluid ounces of water? The measuring cup I use to cook with would be very imprecise I would think.

    Embracing the Brown

@ResolvableOwl Oh god... I am thoroughly confused now. So many questions... BTW, I'm trying to find thiosulfate in Canada but every place I've found will only sell to a lab or to a school. That's why I was trying to get away with using Gecko's path of just using metabisulfate. It seems to...

    Embracing the Brown

Let's say I have a friend who is going to make the simplified version of the stabilizer in a 32 fl. ounce bottle. How much distilled water does he use and how much metabisulfate? Oh! And what is the usage rate? (Ok, ok ... So he is a little dense.) :smallshrug:

    What a disaster

The Agony and the Ecstasy So we cut the soap. It came out pretty good, with some notable exceptions. As was expected, a few of the bars had some serious air pockets. It's ok, though. Those bars will go to testers, family and friends. 🤣 I wish you could just smell it! It is heavenly...

    What a disaster

Ok! Maybe it's not all that bad! Looked at it this morning and saw: After pushing the very thick glob of batter into the sides and corners with our fingers, we covered it with silicone parchment paper and proceeded to roll it out using one of these: It's a roller used to roll out kitchen...
