    Lichens for colorants

I don't quite know why I'm on a zombie quest tonight (resurrecting old threads), but @Vicki C might I ask if anything came of your lichen experiments? With the winter storms here, the entire world seems to be 3 colors of blue/grey with the exception of the pale lime green lichens that pepper...

Newly joined - soapmaker in a previous life LOL

I realize this is an old thread, but had to say, purslane is a fabulous salad green. It is a delicacy only available for a few short weeks where I am. One of my very favorite treats to serve to guests is a chilled chopped purslane salad with EVOO, fleur de sel, fresh blueberries and grilled...

    Oh dear.... granddaughter version

Goodness! Prayers for your family. I'm not Jewish, but there is a Jewish blessing, when someone is on a mission of kindness, G-d will pave their path home.

Advice needed: CP soap turning soft when used as hand soap.

I find your photo strangely fascinating... now I want to lay a bar in a damp sink for a day and squish it on purpose. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Advice needed: CP soap turning soft when used as hand soap.

I make an animal-product-free soap and notice the same thing, a high-level squish factor for the hand soap at the basin, while great performance for the exact same soap from the exact same batch when used in the shower. I've tried a multitude of soap dishes (and am even working on my own...

    Refining a Triple Butter Recipe

Your recipe is very close to mine. I use a 5% SF, I have hard water, and am very outdoorsy, so I like a little conditioning left on my skin after a shower. I add sugar to my lye water for bubbles, and kaolin clay to help with the grabbiness. ETA your soap is very very VERY pretty! Well done!

    Can I remake this mess?

I burnt my soap once, a little more than you did here, I scorched the top of the soap and the plastic mold turned brownish, warped a little, and started to smoke. It was a disaster. Anyhow, I was able to salvage the soap, just sliced off the top burned part, and the mold was damaged but...

    Question

Tone is so hard to convey in writing, even harder to discern, and I think you may have misjudged. @DeeAnna is one of the most knowledgeable people here. She didn't give you a whole paragraph of lecturing, and she certainly wasn't rude.... she gave you a whole paragraph of perfectly reasonable...

It's a Dog eat Dog world out there!

Ha! I'm always begging friends to take my test candles because I have so many! Testing is just so involved and, as you said, expensive! I am sticking with 464 (it works for me on multiple levels), so I work hard to find oils that work with that wax for good ht and ct. I blend a lot, so I can...

It's a Dog eat Dog world out there!

HH is really helping small business owners for exactly the reason you mentioned. I thought soap was expensive and time-consuming to create and test, but candles  take the cake. Interesting about #9 working for tricky SM oils, I have struggled with some of their FOs getting to work in...

It's a Dog eat Dog world out there!

So just putting my money where my [fingers] are, here is a photo of yours truly a few years ago around Carlise, PA with a trooper rescuing a wounded vulture. She was a juvenile turkey vulture, must have been eating by the side of the road when a speeding car hit her. Mr E and I were going along...

    Twice As Much Water!

So I have a question... if you feel you may have goofed up your lye and you need to dump it.... where do you dump it? Just run it down the drain with plenty of water to dillute it? 'Spose I should ask Mr. E, the Nordic God Plumber.... then again, he'd probably think I'd made a goof up, covered...

It's a Dog eat Dog world out there!

Actually, I do, as there are a multitude of cultural differences. Just some quick snippets from the randomness of the internet: Nekhbet, in Egyptian religion, vulture goddess who was the protector of Upper Egypt and especially its rulers. Vulture symbolism is an endless topic, but the main...

It's a Dog eat Dog world out there!

I didn't suggest malicious intent, just poor (very poor) business practice, perhaps avoidable, perhaps not. No judgement here, just voicing my take on the situation. It just so happens I stocked up, but December is a tough time for many small biz owners to hoard inventory (I on the other hand...

It's a Dog eat Dog world out there!

First, cmzaha, words don't exist to describe how sorry I am for your daughter, and I would be banned forever if I used the choice words I have for those hospitals. I pray for your daughter, you, and your family. @Saponificarian I hear you, but I have a different perspective. Cruising the...

Can FOs discolor soap lather too?

[shudder] that is indeed tragic. It might have just taken time to oxidize. If you take a bar and cut the exposed ends off, you may find it lathers fine... but the coloring will likely come back as the fresh cut areas mix with the air and oxidize again.
