do you list sodium hydroxide (lye)

There are two general ways that soapmakers use for listing ingredients: The 'in the pot' method lists everything that went into your soap batter. The 'out of the pot' method lists everything that is in your final product (saponified soap). Neither way is wrong as long as your ingredients are...

Need a spoon/other stirring device that can survive both alkaline (lye) AND acidic conditions - suggestions?

Oooo! I didn't know this but I would love to know more! I bought a stainless steel frothing pitcher on Amazon last year for making my lye solutions and the inside developed a light copper colored ring after the very first use so it's now sitting abandoned at the very back of my soapmaking cupboard.

Need a spoon/other stirring device that can survive both alkaline (lye) AND acidic conditions - suggestions?

I use a heavy stainless steel long island iced tea spoon for my lye solution as well as for dissolving my citric acid for soaps. No problems or visible wear yet and I've been using the same spoon for 3+ years.

    Mystery DOS solved?

I'm all ears. Show me your favorites that don't make a bunch of bubbles. Those tiny pesky bubbles have been my nemesis for the last few months. I assumed it was due to the added aloe gel but now I'm wondering if it's been a problem with my stick blender right along. Amazon links are super helpful.

    Mystery DOS solved?

I see that my local Walmart carries a KitchenAid stickblender. Think that'll be a decent replacement?

    Mystery DOS solved?

Could this be the cause of the mystery DOS I experienced in the recent past? When it happened the first time, I sanitized everything and purchased brand new oils, aloe, and lye but got the same result... DOS starting at about the 1 month mark. So, when I was really scrutinizing EVERYTHING...

What soapy thing have you done today?

Researching stickblenders is my soapy thing for today. Sadly, there will be no more soapmaking til I buy a new one.

SMF September 2024 Challenge - Feathered Mantra Swirl

I've ordered and used that brand many times so I don't think it's the lye.

What soapy thing have you done today?

I've tried cardboard before. Big fail. I've seen that video before but totally forgot about it! Thank you @AliOop !

What soapy thing have you done today?

I'm researching and trying to figure out the best way to DIY some dividers for my log mold.

SMF September 2024 Challenge - Feathered Mantra Swirl

I've seen some swirls (Brambleberry videos) that are done in slab molds before putting grid style dividers in the batter so you don't have to cut the soap after it sets. I took @Mobjack Bay's rule to mean if using this approach, we're supposed to take a pic of the wet swirled soap before adding...

What soapy thing have you done today?

I just signed up for the challenge. I promised myself I'd sign up for at least 1 challenge this year. It can't possibly turn out worse than the spoon swirl challenge when my FO accelerated into what looked like chunks of lava! 😂

Please tell me about salt bars

I knew you'd come to the rescue! Thank you for continuing to educate me. Seriously. You even once saved me from epic failure (soap scum) back when I was considering using maple sand in soap. I still have the pictures of the results from the testing you walked me through.

What soapy thing have you done today?

I figured out how to input/save a custom oil in my SMF calc app (@Mobjack Bay's FA profile for Soy Wax, GW415). Let the recipe building begin!

    Suggestions for oils

@Mobjack Bay Did I do this correctly? From the SMF app, I went to my profile and clicked 'my custom ingredients.' From there I clicked the plus sign in the top right corner, filled in the FA numbers and saved it. There wasn't an option to choose between KOH and NaOH for the SAP value, so I...

What soapy thing have you done today?

I was watching soapmaking videos and this video popped up. Now I know why (I've always wondered why, but was too embarrassed to ask) we do NOT use aluminum utensils when making soap!

Please tell me about salt bars

I remember there were threads that said the minerals in dead sea salt can make the soap weep. There were several people trying to troubleshoot what was causing problems only to find out it was the dead sea salt. Iodized salt has added iodine in it so stands to reason that too high of a...

Please tell me about salt bars

I don't have much time so cutting straight to the bottom to post. I think @Obsidian's recipe would be easy and many SMF members like it. 80 coconut 20 olive 35-50% canning salt or sea salt 20% SF 33% lye concentration Things I've learned: Individual cavity molds are your best friend for salt...
