So I received this certified letter in the mail yesterday...

@MomInWA , Seattle does have a homeless problem that needs to be addressed. But, I do still like what the city has to offer. When I get out of town for a hike, holiday, etc. a small part of me does wonder if it's time to get out of dodge. Usually, I'm too busy to think about that though.

Is water content the only predictor of shrinkage in CP soap?

@AliOop , thank you for your thoughts. Actually, I meant that other than Zany's Castile that had a lye concentration of 37%, the rest had a lye concentration of 30-32%. I didn't think that the difference between 30% and 32% was that big of a difference. I did think that the difference between...

Made soap from used cooking oils....something went wrong :D

@Lidiacgarcia Thank you!! Does this come out as a liquid dish soap or as a bar? It's not clear.

Made soap from used cooking oils....something went wrong :D

Kudos to everyone @Piero , @Ford , @ soapface, and @Lidiacgarcia who is repurposing!!! Our planet needs all the help it can get!! Unless I get stuck somewhere with no soap and used oil available, I probably won't help the planet by making body soap with used oil. But, I definitely am willing...

Entry thread for the September 2022 SMF Soap Challenge - Hybrid soaps, pouring CP and MP together.

@melonpan, was there shrinkage between your cold process soap and your M&P layers? Have you mixed M&P embeds/ layers with CP often? There's been a thread where someone suggested that the M&P gets harder and can end up with a different texture than the CP What suggestions or thoughts do you...

Is water content the only predictor of shrinkage in CP soap?

Question: Is water content the only predictor of shrinkage in CP soap? If not, what else? In anticipation of giving some soaps away this weekend, I went back and looked at the soaps I made in February, March and April. Usually, I look at my soaping journal, decide which soaps I want to give...

    My Second Soap

@Booker, your soap looks great! I haven't tried using glitter on cold process soap (I'm a newbie, too), but I have lots of glitter. I'm going to make a note of all responses and suggestions and then try some glitter swirls!! BTW, how much glitter to 1 Tbsp of olive oil did you use?

So I received this certified letter in the mail yesterday...

@MomInWA The mid 90's were great for the Sounders in Seattle. But, to be honest, Seattleites can be fair weather fans. They are all behind when the team is good, and abandon if we lose few games (or seasons... ). By 2002, the Sounders could hardly give away tickets. So, while I do blame the...

Help me figure out the hardener in this ingredient list - please!

Actually, I see that the recipe had sea salt. That could have been to help with hardening or if chunky, as an exfoliant. You might look up wild yucca root and wild chaparral and see what they are used for in soap. Maybe the yucca root was coloring? I don't know what wild chaparral is.... When...

Help me figure out the hardener in this ingredient list - please!

@Sadie Shannon , as @artemis said, the oils interacting with the lye results in saponification which causes the soap (even soft oils) to harden. Some oils have properties that create a harder bar than others. Have you tried to run a recipe with those oils through SoapCalc? That bar you...

So I received this certified letter in the mail yesterday...

@MomInWA , yeah, they are both wearing green and have brown hair. Definitely worthy of a --- what was it? Oh yeah "trade dress" suit. Let me go get my pen!!!

SMF July 2024 Challenge - Woodgrain Designs

@Zuleika , I don't know if this qualifies as wood grain or not, but i LOVE this #2! Its very suggestive of clouds, sky, mountains!

So I received this certified letter in the mail yesterday...

@ewhitake , this is the first time I've seen this thread. I looked at the original post, the packaging by @wetshavingproducts didn't look similar at all to me. Out of curiousity, I googled them. If they are the same Dr. Squatch soap I found all over the internet, they had/have a pattern of...

Using oat milk and forgetting to add it till after trace 😖

@Janiewoo I agree with @AliOop , your bars look great!! and, yeah, the idea of the post it notes is to move the post it note once the step is done, but i STILL sometimes forget something! Anyway, glad your soap worked out!

Boom recommendation for intermediate soap making with all natural colorants

@Paulaenos I'm impressed! That is really disciplined of you to go through and systematically make all soaps in the books! I got some books from the library. I read them but as far as making the soaps, most of them didn't speak to me. Plus, I've been trying to stick to one recipe and only making...

    Natron?

@tomahtashi I don't know where you'd get more information about ash-based lye, but I watched an episode of Naked and Afraid about a year ago. One of the contestants made soap out there on the savanna. She used the fat of an animal they killed. I hadn't actually made CP soap yet, only M&P...

Using oat milk and forgetting to add it till after trace 😖

@Janiewoo , I'm pretty new to CP soap, too. Because I forgot the fragrance in my first 3 batches -- tried to stir it in to the mold and remaining unpoured batter upon remembering--- I have made myself a checklist that includes each step. I keep my checklist next to me and check off each step...
