Why does my soap do this? Deeanna?

I'm still on the fence on lard as a laundry soap. I've made coconut laundry soap and lard/coconut laundry soap. My next move is to make an old fashioned laundry soap with lard, ammonia, and sugar. We will see... Cheers! Anna Marie

    My new Castile Soap

Actually, lowering sf tends to do the opposite. I recently participated in a group experiment on another thread with an Andalusian recipe that has a -38.5 sf! Interestingly enough, the batch where I used my SB has loads of soda ash (I mean loads). On a side note, the excess lye is eaten up by...

Why does my soap do this? Deeanna?

I wonder if your soap's exfoliating characteristic is related to the high percentage of nut and seed oils???? I have no idea. I'm also interested in what DeeAnna has to say. There's also a former chemistry teacher running around here as well.... Cheers! Anna Marie

    Decent Shampoo Recipe Needed

I have tried to find a "starting point" shampoo recipe myself. There are a couple out there that I might play around with in the future. I am hoping that Soap Queen will write a blog post with a basic shampoo recipe sometime. Good luck! Cheers! Anna Marie

    Lye Fumes

I caught a whiff of these fumes one time, and I'll never forget it. It was only brief, but it made me cough enough to respect its toxicity. Water vapor my foot. I have a water vaporizer for colds and those fumes don't make me cough. Cheers! Anna Marie Oops! I mean water humidifier.

thin layer on top of soaps - soda ash?

Soap Queen recommends to spray the top of the soap with 91% isopropyl alcohol. I do this regularly and it works very well. Cheers! Anna Marie

    Favorite Luxury Soap and why...

I love a lot of soap making oils for different reasons, but if I had to pick a favorite it would be sweet almond because it gives soap such a silky and luxurious lather! Cheers! Anna Marie

Question on Preparing a Soap Solution for pH Testing

Make your soap and be proud. Ignore those who make light of what you do. You will occasionally have to deal with such people, and nothing will defend what you do better then being proud of your creations and knowing they are good quality. Those who are serious about this do set high standards...

Question on Preparing a Soap Solution for pH Testing

My foil will discolor when I use it to cook food. By your logic my food shouldn't be safe, but it is. I'm not thinking discolored foil is a good indicator.

Bite marks on my soap, could it be rat?

So sorry! That just stinks. I'd be fuming myself....Cut your losses and throw the soap away for safety's sake. I would be leery of even touching it with an unaccounted for rat getting into soap. Cheers! Anna Marie Ps- hope you catch the blasted sucker
