When do you trim your soaps?

Hard recipes I plane and bevel the day after I cut. Softer recipes I wait a week.

24 hr soft soap, am I in trouble? check my recipe...

If you are able to place a finger on the soap without any soap getting on your finger, meaning it is soft but not gooey, I believe it will just need a bit more time. If it is still gooey, then there is a problem.

Cellophane or plastic shrink-wrap - self adhering?

You can seal cellophane or shrink wrap with a vacuum sealer if you have one. They use a heated wire to seal.

    Very thick Liquid soap

Some EO's and FOs will thicken liquid soap, I use them for body wash since they gel up. If you want it more liquid you can add more water but be aware of the amount and if you sell consider adding a preservative.

24 hr soft soap, am I in trouble? check my recipe...

Can not tell if there is a problem with the lye, or the water amount because those figures are not listed. There is no problem as far as your oils are concerned. Remember the more water you add the longer you will need to cut. Lye heavy soap tends to be hard and crumble when cut so I don't...

    Lets talk about silk...

Silk is the only additive I can pick out in a soap that doesn't have a texture. Two identical bars except the silk in one and I can tell you which has it. It does make the lather silky, and it gives the illusion of being very mild. Of course it does not make the soap mild, only time and correct...

Anyone know how to dispose lye water?

I just used some lye this afternoon to clear a stubborn clog. Yes, pour it down the drain and follow by flushing with water.

    Essential oil of certain brand..

There is no way I would spend that much on EO. It takes on average .5 oz per pound oils for EO. Some fragrances need more - like lavender (I use .8-1oz) some take less, like tea tree oil (I use between .2-.3 depending if I want to blend it). Please check around for prices. There are many...

    PH

Lol! You don't have to lick the soap. Just wet a finger rub it on the soap and then touch your tongue with the finger. Zap testing is very accurate and unmistakeable. If you think you may have been zapped - you have not! You will not have to question zap. It does not hurt, but is an...

Labeling ingredients - Laws regarding ingredient order

In a word, yes. It is required you list from highest percentage to lowest, however any item using a very small percent (I believe less than 1 ) can be listed at the end in any order. This includes color and fragrances. Tallow is simply tallow - no matter the animal. Only if you are listing what...

    Start up equipment / supplies

Test the silicone mold by filling with water. Put it in a pan first. If it holds it's shape it should be fine. If the side bow out or if the water spills out it will need support. You can build a cardboard box support for it inexpensively. As for the alcohol, a high proof (as high as you can...

Lotion - How long to wait before establishing it's safe/stable?

This is what I do, and yes I sell. First when you you have a recipe you think you want to sell, get a microbial test kit. Lotion crafters sell them. Make your recipe and put some (I use about 4 oz) into 2 jars, put the rest into a clean sterilized mason jar and seal it. For the two jars, leave...

Calendula petals - use or not?

It is not only the lye that destroys beneficial botanicals, it is the heat. When you dry herbs for therapeutic use you should not go over 95 degrees. Even when you are drying for nutritional value you should not exceed 115 degrees. So honestly adding any herb or infusion to soap for...

CP or HP...my final answer. What's yours?

Normal soaps I CP, because I can't make a decent looking HP to save my life. However HP is the only way to go to make cream soap, shaving soap, transparent soap, and rebatches so I can not totally rule out HP. Only one soap I've ever HP'd came out decent, and that because it was meant to look...

    Label Tutorial - Info Gathering

I use avery for almost all my labels. I print on waterproof labels and use a color laser printer. For manipulation of photos or backgrounds I use picmonkey. Both are free programs.

    Bentonite Clay in Clear m&p

It can (same as mixing with the white base) but it wont be attractive.

Commercial Shampoo vs hand made PH issue

Tarkus a Ph of 9 is fine for handcrafted soap. Commercial soap (and shampoo) are not pure soap, they are usually made with detergents that are a lower PH. Most likely it is not the PH of your soap that is causing the burning. Many people have a sensitivity to coconut soap. When you check...

Yes, another "How's my label?" thread

Stacy I really like what you did there! Now I really like the one with the yellow. Amazing how a little tweak can change everything.
