    Potato soap update

Good question. They say it is raw juice so I guess they press the potatoes and use the extracted raw juice. (But do they use it at 100 percent like you ask........good question.) All I ever do is strain the potato water after boiling and cooling and use that. Some small particles still...

Good Price on Butcher Boy Lard

No but I received my cube a few days ago and it looks the same as Armour; but I have not soaped with it yet. I don't know when I will get to it because I have about 80 more pounds of Armour lard to use and I usually stop soaping in late March every year. Might be putting this cube of lard in...

    Homemade Vanilla Stabilizer?

Todd: I just went and looked at your sticky post again and you say the ST has two different forms not SM. Am I missing something?

    Homemade Vanilla Stabilizer?

Just saw this thread, THANKS Todd. So please anyone let me see if I got this right: Basic recipe: 3 parts ST, 3 parts SM to 10 parts water? Use this mixture at a 1 to 1 ratio with the amount of fragrance oil (e.g., 1 ounce mixture with 1 ounce FO)? Can I use this mixture as part of my water...

    Ok a crazy idea...

The 75 percent method is what I will probably use from now on......the soap has still not separated and I have washed my hands a few times with it and can tell no difference from the standard method of making LS. The paste dissolved almost as fast as instant coffee when mixing with the very hot...

    Thanks......will do.

    Ok a crazy idea...

Made another small batch with 75 percent KOH to make the paste and it still dissolved much quicker upon dilution and had a better consistency than the 50 percent KOH method I tried at first. (BTW, I always use sodium lactate but this reduced KOH at start up is still much quicker to dilute.) I...

    Ok a crazy idea...

Quicker dissolving of the paste. The paste turned out soft but it was still a paste.........dissolved very quickly and then I added the remaining KOH solution after dissolving the paste. So far so good but I have to give it a couple of weeks to see if things separate out, etc.

    Ok a crazy idea...

Just for the heck of it I am going to make the initial paste with one half of the KOH and after dilution (which I assume will be much quicker), I will keep the mixture hot and add the remaining KOH the recipe calls for. Maybe it has been done before, I don't know.......maybe it is CRAZY.....I...

    Making the lye solution question.

Thank you........I ended up doing it your way. ETA: Oh, Irish Lass, your way is to use enough water to dissolve the KOH but you then add the full amount of glycerin that would have been used without the water part of your method.........right? If so, that is why I assumed you cut down the...

    Making the lye solution question.

Thank you........I just did it like you said and added the glycerin to the water after the KOH had dissolved then put that combined mixture into the oils. For some reason I thought they had to be kept separate but I misread that part of the instructions when using both water and glycerin as the...

    Making the lye solution question.

DeAnna uses 2 parts glycerin added to the KOH mixed solution that was dissolved in an equal amount of water first. Has anyone ever tried, from the start, just adding the 2 parts glycerin to the 1 part water first........then adding the KOH to that combined mixture? ETA: Oh, and using DeAnna's...

Best oils for an acne fighting soap?

Using tea tree oil at 1 tbl per pound of oil in place of any fragrance oil can help. I have seen some recipes that go as high as 1 ounce of tea tree oil per pound of oil.

    Replacing water with vinegar

Jesus you guys and gals know your stuff!! Just tried some vinegar (only 56 grams in a batch that called for 1,023 grams of liquid), added the 2 extra grams of lye as required and even that little bit hardened up the soap decently after 24 hours. (That is all I wanted it to do so hopefully I...
