    Replacing Palm Oil

My mileage varies. "Bad information" = incorrect. But not necessarily harmful. It's just semantic so let's leave it. In any case, I'm glad I looked up the profiles on Soap Calc to see what was going on. I'm not sure what motivated me but I got a feeling that this had to be checked out. I...

    Replacing Palm Oil

Hi! I haven't soaped for a long time. Thanks also for the comparison tip. Speaking of crazy info on the net, everywhere I read that avocado oil is softening, but I just read somewhere (not Bramble) that due to its relatively high palmitic, it's hardening. 🤷‍♀️ Bad info abounds.... the only...

    Yes, exactly!

    Replacing Palm Oil

I was referring specially to the "vitamins and minerals" which is the reason I quoted it *and* to point out that it is nothing more than marketing fluff.

    Replacing Palm Oil

Looks like I discovered something - Bramble-gate? Palm-gate? Babassu-gate? (my favorite) I think I will write to Brambleberry next week about this. I'm also going to tinker with using avocado oil to sub for palm. Of course results won't be immediate. Ranting fine. There is so much nonsense...

    Replacing Palm Oil

I'm not saying it is. I'm asking a question. I know that bad advice abounds on the internet which is why I checked the profiles on soap calc. I read it here. https://www.brambleberry.com/ingredient-information/oils-and-butters/art0028-palm-oil-alternatives-in-cold-process-soap.html The...

    Replacing Palm Oil

I do realize that this is a subject which has been nearly done to death, but I have a specific question that hasn't been addressed, so here goes. I'm using Soap Calc as my reference. I keyed in 100% palm oil, and got this. (cut & pasted bcos I can't insert images) Lauric 0 Myristic 1...

    Tragedy and Triumph

If you add the honey or the molasses to the lye solution while still hot, will there be a bad reaction? Or affect the chemistry of the honey/molasses?

Lye, Citric Acid, and my own stupidity

That, too, was my problem - I didn't sprinkle. I dumped. Also dangerous. It was such a small amount, so no harm - but still, not good lye technique. I really had a phobia about lye. I think I have the technique down now. The only problem is that sometimes the crystals clump in the container...

Lye, Citric Acid, and my own stupidity

You're right - I looked at YT vids beforehand to refresh my memory and yes, they always stick blend the hell out of batters. Interestingly, in the past I've had batters that didn't turn to pudding and the soaps came out OK. I didn't do a design so it doesn't matter re the soap but it'll save my...

Lye, Citric Acid, and my own stupidity

    1. Thanks for clearing up the order of operations. I'll remember that for next time but I do think that my SC dissolved - I added too much (1 tsp for a 1/2 lb batch) and I got a pudding like trace w/an 80% EVOO oil mix after only 3-4 minutes of stick blending. But next time I'll do better (& add...

Lye, Citric Acid, and my own stupidity

I added sodium citrate to lye solution. Nothing happened. Did I do something wrong?

Lye, Citric Acid, and my own stupidity

Oh gosh, I could have written this post. I recently returned to soap making after a hiatus. I got over my fear of lye. The hardest part is shaking out the little crystals, after that, you're OK by taking proper care. But I nearly got myself into big trouble. I used ice cubes with a little...

Spectrum Vegetable Shortening - How to Calculate

Thank you - I bought some & it makes terrific soap. But from now on (after I use up the can) I will be going palm free. They got to me.

Canola - Does it Cause DOS or Not?

Kevin Dunn has written several articles which have been posted on the Internet about this issue. They were very informative. Thanks for all your answers, as always.

Canola - Does it Cause DOS or Not?

It had nothing to do with not "liking" an answer. I didn't understand something, and thus decided to solicit other opinions.

Canola - Does it Cause DOS or Not?

I've heard so many bad things about Canola causing DOS but I am skeptical. It's just an oil with a certain FA profile & should not cause DOS of itself. Perhaps the oil was rancid to begin with, or on the way to rancidity...? I do not know. What are people's experiences w/Canola. There is a...

Getting Started Without Spending a Ton of Money

Thanks! I started a thread about neats foot and in the process learned that it ain't worth the bother. And that's another thing about soaping - you learn a variety of ancillary skills that you never thought you would learn.

Spectrum Vegetable Shortening - How to Calculate

Spectrum Vegetable Shortening - How to Calculate

Should I calculate it as regular palm oil, or as Crisco with palm oil? The two yield different results from Soap Calc.
