What soapy thing have you done today?

My head is still stuck in the April pull-through challenge 🙃, so I gave it another try with only 2 colors. I used activated charcoal for the black and left the rest of the batter uncolored. The top row is cut horizontally, and the bottom row is cut vertically. I did a faux funnel pour (not...

    litsea substitute?

That blend sounds great! Would you mind sharing what percentage of basil EO you use in that blend? I bought some basil EO recently but haven't been able to decide what to use it with. I'd go with lemongrass as a substitute for litsea. The lemon EO I've used has faded every time. ETA: I agree...

The "One Recipe" Theory - Question

I've been soaping for a little over a year, and one of the most enjoyable parts is playing around with my recipes. I'm always thinking to myself . . . "Hmm, that soap with 10% shea butter is good. Would 20% feel substantially better/different?" Or: "Which liquid oils do I like best? Olive...

    Kaolin Clay Recipe Help!

Thanks so much for your input @Malleebird ! I think I'm going to try Kaolin clay. I'm also intrigued by your lavender and palmarosa EO blend. I bought palmarosa recently and haven't been able to decide what to blend it with. Do you blend it with any other EOs?

@Mobjack Bay I LOVE your round soaps! Love the natural colors! They look organic, in the sense of looking at something under a microscope. Very cool!

    Kaolin Clay Recipe Help!

What does kaolin clay add to soap? Lather? I've never used it.

SMF April 2020 Challenge - Strainer Pour/Pull Through Technique

Thanks, @jcandleattic!! The plastic was quite rigid, actually, especially for such a small mold (500g of oils). I had to make sure my batter was quite thin. I tried this tool again with thicker trace, and the soap didn't stream through the holes. I had quite a mess on my hands!

SMF April 2020 Challenge - Strainer Pour/Pull Through Technique

Here's my pull-through tool. It's a plastic spiral notebook cover that I punched and cut holes in. (I couldn't purchase anything due to lock-down.) And here are the cuts I didn't use as my entry: They're all vertical cuts from different spots in the loaf.

SMF April 2020 Challenge Entry Thread - Strainer Pour/Pull Through Technique

I improvised on a pull-through tool to make do with what I already had at home (lock-down blues :( ). I used a plastic spiral notebook cover that I punched and cut holes in. I'll post a picture in the challenge thread. The soap I chose for my entry is cut horizontally, although I also got...

    Newbie soap troubleshooting.

I love high olive oil soap, but not 100% OO soap. I enjoy it much more with, say, 10% coconut oil and 5% castor. This way you would still be using your olive oil but also add some nice lather to your soap. You may want to do a search here for Zany's Castile soap. Her recipe calls for "faux...

Sales on companies FO for CP soap

@math ace, I'm interested to know which fragrances you like from Micas and More. I've been happiest with their Lavender & Apricot. All their fragrances I've tried so far have behaved exceptionally well in CP.

New to cold process, please help!

My best advice is to make small batches in the beginning. I've been soaping for a bit over a year, and I still make small batches (~500g or 16oz). This way if soap doesn't come out as expected, you haven't "wasted" ingredients. I've been able to experiment much more because only 500 grams of oil...

SMF April 2020 Challenge - Strainer Pour/Pull Through Technique

I've had my own misadventure as well! I usually don't gel my soap because I like to use low water/high lye concentration. But this time I used 30% lye concentration because I wanted my soap to gel so the colors would be vivid. And it didn't gel. 😢 It was just very soft and took 5 days to unmold...

SMF April 2020 Challenge - Strainer Pour/Pull Through Technique

Sign Up List: 1. Atiz. This looks like so much fun and I need some more excuse to make soap. 2. jcandleattic - this was going to be my next soap this week anyway, might as well enter it. 3. Misschief - been wanting to try this. Now, I have no excuse. 4. Bookreader451 - just note my results may...

    Favorite soap-making paraphernalia?

I make small batches (about 500g), and the espresso cups I bought in a thrift store are so useful. They are just the right size for my for all my additives, like mica, citric acid, honey, oatmeal, EOs and FOs, etc. I line them up on my counter in the order I need to add things. It's also a good...

Soy wax soap . . . and your skin

Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions!! I have a 10% soy wax soap curing now, and I'll think I'll try it with shea butter next time.
