    Can caustic soda/sodium hydroxide/lye spoil?

I'm from a warm and humid place too! I don't buy lye in bulk since I make small batches. Usually 1kg bags, then I decant them into small HDPE (500ml) clear containers with inner lids. Really helps to keep it dry as I noticed less clumping. Fills about 2 and a half containers. Previously I had a...

    Natalie the Newbie

Welcome to the soapy fam! I love your train of thought. Sometimes I watch soapy videos and wonder how do people use a giant bar of soap with soap frosting on top. Looks good and all but practicality wise... Are you making loaf type or individual mould type? I used to make smaller loaves like...

How are you offsetting the cost of Olive Oil?

Thanks @Tammyfarms ! This article really explained it easily. Off to the supermarket I go. Preparing for the inevitable OO price increase.

How are you offsetting the cost of Olive Oil?

Just to check, these 2 are Canola oil labels and would be considered mid oleic? I've been wanting to replace part of my OO and went back to looking at Canola and Sunflower. There are no cost friendly HO versions locally. Recently I found some Canola brands that have changed numbers for sat/unsat...

What soapy thing have you done today?

Made my first scraping soap. The pink set up a bit too much so had some air bubbles inside that I just couldn't tap them out. I got a plastic scraper and the stamps. It was hard getting the ears scraped properly! I might have scraped 30 times. Trust the process!

    Bird nest in CP soap

Update on the bird's nest soap. I tried the blue clay one and was plesantly surprised by the lather! Bigger bubbles than usual and definitely a silky feel. (Could also be due to RBO in the recipe). Considering my usual recipes have 25% CO/PKO, so I am used to bubbly lather. This was definitely...

    batter color - less yellow?

I use RBO in my soaps and I find that my RBO recipes tend towards yellow. I am in the process of replacing my RBO for a "whiter" oil like Sunflower/Canola. I do like the feel of RBO in my soaps but prefer a naturally white soap so I don't have to TD it so much. Looking at the recipe, palm could...

    Dubious jojoba oil

Yeah.. I am easily tempted by sample sized oils to use in soaping. Need to stop buying samples... Plus this was in a foreign website. I could make lip balms using this. It's really of a thin consistency so maybe sugar scrubs?

    Dubious jojoba oil

Peeps, should I risk it and use this in Cp soap? Got it without reading the ingredient list. If not Cp soap, what else can I use it for?

    Bird nest in CP soap

Totally thrilled with my soaps! Unmoulded perfectly after 1 day. I'm really glad my batter was thin enough to go around all the loofah bits since I used it dry. The blue clay one had visible ash which I tried to buff off some. I'm happy that the blue clay mellowed into a lighter blue. I was...

    Bird nest in CP soap

Bird's nest test done and waiting to unmold. Pic 1. Bird's nest before and after soaking. Of course I forgot to weigh it. Used it in 1kg of soap batter. Pic 2. Blended up bird's nest. Didn't blend fully so some smaller bits left. Pic 3. Mixed in with lye water and it turned pale yellow. You...

    Bird nest in CP soap

Apparently my stock is well kept. Don't have many bits to use. I'm reluctant to crush up the whole pieces for soap. I can't blend into oils as I don't have a SB. Should I grind it up and use as an additive? Probably enough bits for 1 bar only. On a side note, I found a stash of pearl powder.

    Bird nest in CP soap

Bird's nest is high in protein. It won't melt like silk so best bet is to use it ground up? Interesting idea though... Let me go home and rummage in my drawer to see if I have some crushed bits to make a tester.

    New Soap

Wow, wow and wow! This looks great! I haven't been brave enough to venture into soap frosting yet. I love how white the frosting is. How did you pour the pink swirl? It looks like there's some white and gold mixed in?

    Lye mixing containers

I'm no glass camp too. Terrified of glass shards and my wrists are weak so plastic is just so much lighter to carry compared to glass. Plastic is cheaper compared to glass or SS in my area.

Is this shea butter still good?

Looks like the same problem as mine. FO added then boom! Settled into curds. Chopped them up with a palette knife while drizzling red liquid dye in then squashed them into the loaf. Heated up quite a bit when squashing in. I'm sure it gelled as the insides are nice and smooth unlike the lumpy...

    Palm olein oil

The bottom is also 5% but with added turmeric. I shall try a 10% next time.

    Palm olein oil

Got a small bottle of Red Palm Oil and used it at 5%. Super lovely colour! Top part is plain 5% Red Palm. Bottom has turmeric and walnut beads.

    Why use distilled water?

Question about distilled water for CP soap. I usually buy DW from the supermarket that's labelled distilled water. Someone asked me why I don't use distilled water for cosmetic purposes. Is there a difference? She was visibly surprised when I said I use supermarket DW and my soap turned out...

How to make just 1 bar of soap?

The smallest I ever made was about 0.7lb(320g) for factoring in salt in my salt bar. If it's not a variation of oils, you could make a 1lb and split into smaller batches to add additives.
