What soapy thing have you done today?

Ooh, this is interesting. I made a soap not too long ago using sea salt and sugar so I left out my sodium lactate, and now I'm even more curious to see how the final bar feels! It certainly was nice while I was soaping it. I don't *think* I have any problems with the SL but it's certainly...

ENTRY THREAD for the January 2024 SMF Challenge – Mini Drop[Mini Drip] Swirl Technique

Here's my entry :D The color scheme was inspired by the FO I used in it, Blackberry & Magnolia from Cierra Candles and Soap. I thought of pretty pink and white flowers against a blue sky, then added purple for the blackberries. I used a very slow moving lard based recipe and did a much better...

SMF JANUARY 2024 CHALLENGE – Mini Drop [Mini Drip] Swirl

Getting my photos ready to post, it doesn't look like I'll be able to squeeze one more attempt in before the deadline, *but* I will be giving this technique another try some time!

    katili's soaps, 2024

Oops, I forgot one! This is my watercolor soap for another soap challenge. I had a few small snags, but overall, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out!

    Double Lavender

This is so pretty! The only trick I know about gradients is that you have to be reaaaaallllly patient and add just the smallest bit of the other color and go line by line. I saw someone that said it took them an hour to pour their gradient, and it looked pretty smooth but wowza that's a long time.

    Brambleberry FO labels

Oh gosh, I didn't know this. I better get in there and label mine now while I know what they are. Thanks for the heads up!

Help me out with a name?

Oh right! I knew you were in NZ but forgot for a moment. I think you're probably fine to use it then, if you like it hehe :) Forest Mist works really nicely with the colors you've got. I love that bright blue even if it wasn't what you expected.

Help me out with a name?

I like Lake Erie as a name for it, but I have lived my entire life on the west coast and have never been to the Great Lakes, so I can't speak to how anyone with any sort of connection to them might feel about that.

    How to blend fragrance oils?

I did this once, I was able to get an empty bottle from one of the places I buy my FOs. I did just mix and stir them really well, and pour them into the big bottle. When I’m ready to use it I just kind of flip the bottle upside down and right side up again in case anything settled (like mixing...

    Why use distilled water?

This is how I master batch my lye, no trouble yet but my oldest batches are only a few months old. I used distilled for the rest of my water when soaping. I can’t imagine it really being different. Mine I’m sure is the same as what’s at the store, but I have a water delivery service so I get a...

    katili's soaps, 2024

Thank you everyone for the kind words! Now that I am back at my computer, here are some more soaps :D This batch is the one that really taught me what the water to lye ratio means haha, and to *always* double-check a recipe. I now know I don't want to go above 2:1 liquid:lye ratio without a...

    katili's soaps, 2024

I really like it! It’s easy to move around to where my light is and doesn’t take long at all to set up. It did take me a bit to find a good spot to store it but it’s very versatile and I can use it for pretty much everything I photograph.

    katili's soaps, 2024

Oh I’ve seen this method, too. It does seem easier than folding. You don’t get any problematic leaking in the corners? My mold is a thin wood one my husband made for me. The first one always takes me a while, then I get into a bit of a groove usually. Maybe that’s why I always wait until I have...

    katili's soaps, 2024

Thank you both! Oh, I'll have to give freezer paper a shot if I decide to use that mold again hehe. It's the folding that got me! My lighting is natural, I have a nice big window I photograph next to and reflect light back from the other side of it. My setup is kind of a lot but could pretty...

    katili's soaps, 2024

I got around to photographing and editing a lot of soap so I thought I'd show some off :D In absolutely no particular order all all, now that I think about it. And maybe in a few posts because... well, there really are a lot. This is probably my favorite soap I've made so far, I showed a rough...

White Tea & Ginger FO from Fragrance Buddy

Oh what a bummer! I personally wouldn't use it in soap with that low of a safe amount, I've never gone below 3% with any of my FOs and suspect at less than 1% it wouldn't survive saponification. I don't know how the scents compare, but Cierra Candles and Soap carries a White Tea and Ginger...
