SMF May 2023 Challenge: Spoon or Spatula Swirl

Congrats, @Mobjack Bay and @basti! This was a fun and pleasant challenge. Super proud of folks who participated in their first challenge this month!

What soapy thing have you done today?

Took a bunch of photos of soap to put in my website. I think I made them a year ago. 😂 One batch I used BB’s Lily Lemon Drop and it still smells lovely. Good to know that the fragrance stuck around. Also took photos of a batch of Lavender Sage from Nurture Soap. Lovely fragrance and, as I also...

    My First Attempt

I also use wooden shoe racks to cure my soap. They are inexpensive, lightweight, allow the soap to breathe, stackable, and easily sourced. I think your soaps look great! Well done!

    Olive oil alternative

I second @lsg on rice bran oil. I prefer it in soap over olive oil and made the switch to use it as my main liquid fat about a year ago. It’s also less expensive than olive oil, which is a bonus. I do have it shipped as I have not found a local supplier, but even then it’s still less expensive...

    Help with Spotty Soap

I believe that they are stearic spots due to not heating the Shea butter hot enough. I recommend melting the the Shea butter at a much higher temperature. Ideally, around 160 degrees Fahrenheit. At a minimum. I recommend melting the lard and Shea butter to 160 (or even 180) and then adding...

    Help with Spotty Soap

Do you recall how hot you got the fats up to when you melted them (particularly the Shea butter and lard)? Do you recall about what temperature the fats were when you made the soap?

Entry Thread for the SMF May 2023 Challenge - Spoon or Spatula Swirl

I recently went on a backpacking trip off the coast of California on Catalina Island along the Trans- Catalina Trail. Comprising 38 miles, it begins on the southern end of Catalina in Avalon, and ends on the northern end. Having turned 50 this year, the trip was intended to honor myself. And...

    What in the world?

Looks like essentials are “weeping.” You could leave the bars out to cure for a few weeks and see if the fragrance absorbs.

    Soap scent could attract mosquitoes

Hmmm. Maybe it’s time I revisit testing neem oil in soap. It’s been a few years.

    Soap scent could attract mosquitoes

I’ve also tried using neem oil on my roses to deter aphids. Did nothing to keep them at bay. 🤬 You can use the same neem oil that you use on plants in your soap. Neem oil in soap still retains the scent. I’m personally not a fan and haven’t used it since. Someone in here uses lime FO to...

SMF May 2023 Challenge: Spoon or Spatula Swirl

Really nice, @CLMP! I like the effect of minimally swirling the bottom layer into the rest of the soap.

    recipe feedback pls

With the addition of neem and sesame oil, I would not superfat any higher than 5%.

SMF May 2023 Challenge: Spoon or Spatula Swirl

Deploying this soap design is a bit like putting makeup on in the dark.

SMF May 2023 Challenge: Spoon or Spatula Swirl

My advice for those still waiting to make their entry is to make more than one pass with your spoon in each section of the soap. Unless you want the individual colors to be more defined and not heavily swirled with the other colors.

SMF May 2023 Challenge: Spoon or Spatula Swirl

@AliOop Oh, dear. You win the award for best imitation of 70% lean ground beef soap. Funny but not funny. Nice marbling, though. :D

SMF May 2023 Challenge: Spoon or Spatula Swirl

Cut my soap. Can't say it thrilled me, but it is a story-driven concept soap, so it will have to do.

SMF May 2023 Challenge: Spoon or Spatula Swirl

Entry tucked in for the night to be cut tomorrow. I have zero idea how it will turn out. And that's kind of fun.

SMF May 2023 Challenge: Spoon or Spatula Swirl

Master batched my fats yesterday while making dinner to get ready make soap! Today I’ll make my lye solution and hopefully make my entry tomorrow on my work-from-home day. Have a general idea of the colors I want to use. Might disperse my micas today as well. May use this design as an...
