Adding sodium lactate and sodium citrate to my soap

As a side note, being a soap seller, although I no longer sell or even make soap these days, I wouldn't say I liked spending money when I did not need to I soaped with vinegar instead of SL. It added hardness so I could de-mold much quicker and even another boost to my chelator. But soaping with...

    Camden Gray is closing

I always loved their lavender 40/42. Another good company going away. Makes me sad even if I am no longer making soap

How are you offsetting the cost of Olive Oil?

My best selling soap was 40%tallow 20% lard 15-20% HO Canola or Sunflower Castor and PKO/CO Split

    Armour Lard

My go to no vegan soaps that I sold for years are 40% tallow 20% lard. I find the combo makes fantastic soap.

    EDTA math

I always found it easier to simply figure dry edta at a rate of 1% of my total batch weight then remove some of my batch liquid and dissolve the edta add it to my oils. Actually I always use 0.5% EDTA and 0.6% Sodium Gluconate, because I have hard water. I may cut down when I get moved because...

    Shrink wrap out?

Granted I have not sold since before COVID, but my customers never complained about shrink-wrapped bars. In fact many appreciated it and told me they would never purchase an un-wrapped bar. I tried boxes at the beginning of my soap-selling journey and they just did not work for me for these...

    Heating pad question

This is my method or was. I used these crates to put in two of my log molds and would stack 3 or 4 of them with heat pads or heat blankets in between the crates. I did not put the heat pads directly in the crates. I would have to check on my soaps periodically to make sure they were not...

ROE and sodium gluconate usage - requesting help with plan details

I personally would make a good guess at how much is left in my partial bottles and add in a few drops of ROE. I personally never added ROE in individual batches just in my 5-gallon jugs of oil when I first opened them. My EDTA/SG combination combined with my low superfat seemed to keep DOS...

Any tips for changing lye concentration

Using Chelators such as EDTA or Sodium Gluconate can help stop issues with Dos. I regularly soap or did before retiring from selling with a 33% Lye Concentration, soaped cool and had to force gel with my formula.

    Making swirls

Peacock swirls are done in square molds and are fun to do, that is a Taiwan swirl as Ali mentioned. True Peacock You can look up some videos on how to do Peacock swirls, they are fun to do but they do take a couple of special tools and have a learning curve. I used to like to do them but did not...

    Making swirls

The very first adjustment I would make is to cut the castor oil down to no higher than 5% castor is an accelerator. I found a difference between using castor at 3% versus 5% when I was experimenting with slow-tracing recipes. Also, your 44% CO makes for a very cleansing bar of soap, many folks...

Should I buy a new scale?

yep, I am one of those daredevils that pours all oils directly into One pot, but I also low superfat, anywhere from 1-2% so no big deal if I overpour, which I usually do not. I just bought my 3rd KD8000 because I have started baking sourdough bread and my old soapmaking KD8000 scale, although...

Thanks for having me! Relatively rookie soap maker making a career out of it

Welcome, I am in Whittier although not for much longer, selling in markets all over Southern CA, before I retired from selling in 2020. We had our boat in O'side for over 10 years.

Do I have unreacted Lye/Need to rebatch?

Partial gel only means that soap did not gel to the outer edges of the soap. Gel starts in the middle of your soap and goes out, so if it cools to fast you will only get a partial gel. Until you completely know how your recipe acts it can be hard to control gel in a very liquid batter since the...

    Activated Charcoal causing acne?

It is certainly possible she just cannot use AC soap, so she needs to stick to what works for her, that is the nice thing about handmade soaps. I have had customers that could not use any lye soaps no matter how they were made, we are all different.

Do I have unreacted Lye/Need to rebatch?

Let's figure this out. First off a batter poured at just emulsion will commonly stay zappy for 72 hrs. My lard/tallow soaps I pour when I just barely get a stable emulsion so they are very liquid and I do have to force gel or they will get a partial gel with a very chalky outside, sometimes...

    Activated Charcoal causing acne?

What percentage of CO are you using? The bottom line is your bar may be to harsh and overacting her oil glands. To much AC or CO. I sold many AC facial bars made with low CO but enough AC to make them very dark gray. I also had a lot of customers that liked light salt bars with 20% neem oil and AC.

    Bug Bite recipe for everyone

Calif is still beautiful, beaches, mountains deserts, but the crime is out of control, it just is not the same state it used to be I am sorry to say. Although that is not why I am leaving CA, it is my home and I still love it. Lol, at least the Mormon crickets only last a short time. They also...

    Newbie oil question

I agree with LSG and I am sure the results will be just fine. Personally I would go with a 2% super fat and 17% or less CO, PKO or my preference is to split CO and PKO.
