Ethical Considerations (for me) for soapmaking

Maybe make a list of oils on a continuum from 'Oils you would use' - to 'Oils you would definitely not use' in terms of your beliefs/ethical requirements. Then look at all those on the 'would use' side of the continuum and see if you have a sufficient fatty acid profile in there to make decent...

    I'm back!

Oh - and we got married on Roger's 64th birthday (apparently so I wouldn't forget the date - it's like he assumes I remember what date his birthday is or something!)

    I'm back!

Hi everyone, and thank you to those who sent me messages of concern. I have been out of action for a few weeks because we went to a remote part of the country (Stewart Island). And while we were there we got married! None of my family knew we were getting married so it was a big surprise when...

    Pumpkin puree

@ackosel - you are better to find a pumpkin spice FO that trying to use EOs. As you've discovered the safe usage rates are too low. Cinnamon leaf has a slightly higher usage rate than bark from memory.

    Hi everyone 😄😄😄

Hello and welcome! Oils that make your soap lather are: Coconut, Babassu, Palm Kernel (Use at no more than 20% - or only 10% if you want it to be less harsh) Oils that help with hardness/longevity are: Lard, Tallow, Palm, Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter or Soy wax (Use a combination of these up to a...

    How do you increase bubbles?

It is not measured PPO. The powder is a 200x concentrate, so if I'm using, say 600g of water, I add 3g of powder to make up aloe juice.

    How do you increase bubbles?

I use aloe either way - when i can be bothered to peel and puree my aloe leaves I use the juice, otherwise I use concentrate powder. Try lowering your superfat to 3% too - superfat can hinder bubbles. I agree with decreasing the castor and increasing the CO.

    Awapuhi Juice in Soap???

I see no reason why it can just be blitzed into a juice and used as the water component. Be aware it might accelerate your soap batch if there is any 'spice' in the juice. I'd try half water/half juice for the first batch. And then gradually increase it from there if that goes without a hitch.

    Soy Wax Convert!

    It is 13 + 1. Prior to increasing to 30% RBO it was 11 + 1.

    Soy Wax Convert!

I've used four different soy waxes in my time. Only one of them seems to be internationally recognised - GW415. My recipe is: 20% SW 20%CO 10% Shea 30% RBO 10% OO 5% Avo 5% Castor I used to use 20% each of RBO and OO, but OO, as you know, has skyrocketed in price, so I've recently changed the...

Why do you like making soap?

So turns out it's a relative of Cockney rhyming slang from London. There was a period of time where petty criminals were sent to Australia (sometimes for something as simple as stealing a loaf of bread to feed a starving family). Given a lot of these 'criminals' were from the East End of London...

For a year in the early 80s and another six months in the early 2000s. I never ate anything by that name.

    Candle wax in soap

I just found this: https://balmonds.co.uk/blogs/blog/the-problem-with-paraffin-in-emollients Bear in mind they are promoting their own (non-paraffin) products, but they do make a strong case..

Why do you like making soap?

@AliOop Since I can't look it up, then unless @KiwiMoose DMs me the answer, I will have to wait until you tell me what it is. But with those names, I'm just not sure I really want to know.😅 I have absolutely NO idea. Some things obviously never make it out of Australia - even though...
