    Russian Cambrian Blue Clay

Do you like the color it imparts in soap? Is it blue or more of a grey color? Please let us know the info you find out - I am interested in this clay as well. Carolyn

    Adding herbs to soap

Calendula will remain yellow in your soap - so pretty. I snip the petals into smaller pieces and add less rather than more at thin trace. Carolyn

Getting Ready for My First Batch!

Your excitement is wonderful!! I remember that feeling the day my soaping supplies arrived for my first batch! Be sure and have someone take pictures when you soap - you will be glad you did! A couple of thoughts: 1.Did you run your recipe through SoapCalc or another soap calculator...

    Liquid Soap

I have used Dr. Bronner's once - a long time ago - and if I remember it is rather thin. Handmade liquid soap can be thinner than conventional liquid soap because you control the amount of dilution. What aspects are you looking to achieve in making a LS? The David Fisher recipe is a nice...

Wow finally had my first problem batch!

As it cures, your soap may warp - due to that amount of water. No worries it will still be great soap, just a little aesthetically challenged! Carolyn

    Ok i gotta ask

When I used to live in a colder climate, the house would be too cold overnight to get a nice full gel. Even with wood molds and insulating. Therefore during the winter months, I would put my insulated soap into a warm oven (turned off) and leave the light on overnight. This helped avoid a...

    Liquid Soap

I ditto what Fragola says. When I started making liquid soap I used the recipe by David Fisher at About.com. I can vouch for the recipe - it is good basic liquid soap. He gives more detailed information that the previous two links. http://www.candleandsoap.about.com/od/l ... idsoap.htm...

Thank you so much, Kellistar! I really like my liquid soap, but it is a tad bit too thin. I've been weighing my options for thickening and I'll get researching this option! Carolyn

Please help, I'm a disaster at liquid soap!

Christy, when I make liquid soap, I make my paste in the crock pot. This is how I dilute my paste: Step 1: In a large pot bring dilution water to a roiling boil on the stovetop. Step 2: Lower heat and add in chunks of soap paste to the simmering hot water. Careful not to let anything...

Please help, I'm a disaster at liquid soap!

Cristy, I don't think you have ruined your batch - it should return to the amber liquid it was. You probably need to add a bit more water - you have lost some with all of that cooking. Afterwards, just let it sit somewhere for about a week. I find my liquid soap will SLOWLY dissolve over the...

    Glycerine instead of water?

Making liquid soap involves a different type of lye - potassium hydroxide (KOH) whereas bar soap uses sodium hydroxide (NaOH). I use both the traditional and glycerin method of liquid soapmaking (again using KOH). The glycerin method traces faster and seems to be milder on my skin. Are you...

    Lining a wood mold?

I double line my mold. That is I cover all the parts of my wooden mold with freezer paper and tape everything down securely. Then I do a regular lining which will come in contact with the soap. This second lining comes out with the block of soap and then I simply wipe down the base lining and...

    Did my rebatch become HP?

Ok. I was just wondering how the cook of the rebatch (2 hours) would be different from the cook of a HP.

    Did my rebatch become HP?

I made soap last week and it was sooo ugly. Three days after I made the soap, I chopped it all back up and put it in a large SS pot along with additional liquid (goat milk). It melted (kinda) and I stirred and stickblended for about 2 hours over medium-low heat. Then I glopped it back into my...

'popping' lye and dryer sheets, learn from my mistake!

Paillo I use a dryer sheet that has been used a few cycles and I find they are very helpful at reducing flying lye.
