    Discoloration/Darkening...What could have happened?

Ahhhh that's why! Thank you, Alchemy&Ashes! I may try a stabilizer. I make some soaps with FO's and some with EO's. Would the color darkening also apply if using vanilla EO?

    Discoloration/Darkening...What could have happened?

Also -- I find with a few of my batches that the soap has this sort of gritty look to it- doesn't feel gritty, but you can see little speckles. What could this be? I'm thinking maybe NaOH bits undissolved (but how - it was all liquid when I poured..?) or maybe shea? Bums me out. :(

    Discoloration/Darkening...What could have happened?

So this soap is now a few weeks old and I've been meaning to make a post about this when I first noticed the change- been a little busy. I made a new batch of soap. Recipe: EVOO 30% Coconut Oil 76 25% Shea Butter 20% Castor Oil 10% Avocado Oil 15% I used a Chocolate FO, Moonlight...

    Share your favourite recipe

Re: Share your favorite soap recipe I played around with a new recipe last night for CP soap and it came out beautifully! It's slow to trace and it helped me accomplish my first swirl. :D 30% EVOO 20% Avocado Oil 20% Coconut Oil 15% Apricot Kernal Oil 10% Cocoa Butter 5% Castor Oil I...

    Pimento Leaf...?

Hey all. :D I have a request from my boyfriend to make him soap with pimento leaf EO. He wants to use it after a work out as a muscle relaxant. Does anyone have any experience working with this EO? Perhaps a recipe they can share? Or even just a good amount of the oil to use in a soap batch...

Salt bars! I am in loooooooove!

Thanks. =) Took them out of the mold and I see this: I assume this is what gelling is? Why did this batch gel and my clay batch not gel? Also, I notice now there is what I believe to be ash forming on my clay salt bars. It looks like white powdery flecks. A) How do I get the ash off...

Salt bars! I am in loooooooove!

Now that I made this first batch of salt bars I think I ONLY want to make salt bars! What a fun adventure this was! I used the recipe provided by the YouTube page soapmaking101. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVaK5sm0jmc I used Australian Pink Clay and French Green Clay and scented it with a...

    3rd Official Soap Batch Ever!

:D Thanks all! Hazel, thank you for the tip! I'll research more about using sodium lactate and if I can find some I'll definitely give it a try. =)

I love New Directions Aromatics for FOs. Compared between BB, Voyageur (Canadian) and ND, ND has the best prices. And they show reviews below the product listing- surprisingly a LOT of buyers have reviewed most products so it's great to hear an opinion of an item before you buy. Great customer...

    3rd Official Soap Batch Ever!

This was a new batch that I used to test for slowing down trace. Before I was using pomace OO and heard it speeds trace up so I tried EVOO and decided to use a new recipe. Recipe: 45% EVOO, 30% vegetable shortening, 20% coconut oil & 5% castor oil. FO: Coffee Cake & Spice from New Directions...

My trace speeds up WAY too fast!

I tried a new batch all together! I used 45% EVOO, 30% vegetable shortening, 20% coconut oil and 5% castor oil. Low and behold I actually got to stickblend the batter for over a minute! Thanks for all of the tips! :D

    Preservatives

Thanks for the clarification. So, with that being said- could a product have mold growth without being rancid? Or would a different way to say this be that preservatives protect against mold growth, bacteria and rancidity while antioxidants protect purely rancidity but not mold growth or bacteria?

My trace speeds up WAY too fast!

Hmmm... I'm going to try this again tonight and keep everyone posted. I'll use EVOO instead and reduce my shea- maybe add more EVOO and almond oil? I must admit, though it's disappointing that my trace sped up too quickly, I sort of enjoy this trial-and-error aspect of soapmaking. :D

My trace speeds up WAY too fast!

I did use Olive Pomace! The recipe is: 5.5oz olive pomace 5.5oz coconut oil 76 6.6oz shea butter 2.2oz castor oil 2.2oz almond oil So I suppose it could be the pomace...I wonder, could it also be that I'm not using distilled water? Both times I didn't have distilled water but I was so...

My trace speeds up WAY too fast!

Hello gangeroos (soaperoos?), I've made two batches of soap thus far. My first was unscented and my second was scented. Both times I noticed I baaaarely had to stickblend the 'batter' for longer then, I don't know, 20 seconds before it reached 'trace' and once I started to add my colorants...

    Preservatives

I'm a newbie but from what I understand there is no need for one- I assume you'd follow the date for "expiry" from the oil/butter you use with the earliest expiry point. I've read that tocopherol (Vitamin E) can be used as a natural preservative because of it's antioxidant power...can anyone...
