    help with dark ale PLEASE

Hello! Im pretty new to soaping but not new to beer so I feel, being a brewer, I may be able to add some helpful info finally. Alcohol is a broad term. When people talk about beer/wine/spirits and refer to Alcohol they are referring to Ethanol. However, there are many other "alcohols" in...

    wrong lye?

Yes it definitely gelled. Looked just like that and got hot. I wrapped it in blankets as well. I was thinking maybe the excessive amount of OO may have caused the laten drying. Not sure. thanks for all your help. I'm sure I'll have tons more questions when I do the rebatch lol!

    wrong lye?

Zap tested it right after I cut it this afternoon. No zap, just tasted like  On this batch I accidently added 1/2 the lye I should have so i cant imagine it being too alkaline. Im still a noob so Im not sure if by gel do you mean in the pot but it traced rather quickly and was...

    wrong lye?

Thanks for the pointers! I adjusted my second batch to lower the canola and following youre suggested recipe I went ahead and made a third test batch; so far all unscented. I cut my first batch, the one without enough lye, and we gave it a test run under the faucet. It feels incredibly silky...

    wrong lye?

OK, thanks. I read that canola was a decent filler oil. You'll have to forgive the noobie, not sure what DOS means. Im considering these all test batches, so Im experimenting around with smaller batches. As far as the lye amount I listed does that seem about right for 2lb batch? Thanks...

    wrong lye?

exactly, it would still sap, but there would only be enough lye solution to sap half +/- the oils... oily soap indeed... but soap nonetheless....like you said, learning op for rebatching!! :) dont throw it out though, def rebatch.. it can be salvaged!! :) gearing up for batch two...

    wrong lye?

Just made it last night. now that im preparing for next batch I'm worried I didnt use enough lye. I calculated my recipe based on 1lb but made a 2lbs batch. I calculated 1.92oz of lye but I think I forgot to double it for the extra LB of oil?!?! Guess Ill find out. it traced and is looking...

    wrong lye?

I think it's silly that big brother has to babysit us. Just b/c ppl use lye in the manufacture of some drugs doesnt give them the right to take it away. I can still buy straight naptha, they use that to precipitate meth. Anyways, I didnt post the recipe, figured it was self explanitory. I...

    wrong lye?

Ok, I am posting this just in case someone else has the same problem. Soapcalc wasnt adjusting my lye amounts earlier. In order to fix the problem I had to close the program and reopen it - this worked - this time. So, after checking and rechecking my lye amounts 5 times I have just completed...

    wrong lye?

Thanks you for the help! I was able to go to the other local lowes and pick up roebics 100% lye. Only problem I am having now is Soapcalc isnt showing me any lye amounts. It says "0.134 NaOH SAP" No matter what I change in the recipe. Am I using it wrong???

    wrong lye?

its called Liquid Heat. I read that lowes carries lye but all i found was this and another drain cleaner that was solids. I didnt get the solid form b/c it had blue balls in it as well. If lowes does carry lye would it be anywhere other than in the plumbing deptartment?

    wrong lye?

I picked up some drain cleaner from lowes today- liquid. Only thing it claims to contain is sodium hydroxide. I added it to distilled water while preparing to make soap and noticed no heating whatsoever. Im guessing this means i can not use this stuff? plz help!

    Saying hello

Hello, Ive been homebrewing for 11 years and Ive been brewing professionally for 4. However, I've suffered the fate of many here in Ohio and have been laid-off. I've always wanted to make soap ever since I'd seen Fight Club- my favorite movie and with all this extra time on my hands I look...
