    Wooden Mold Woes

Thanks for the tip! Before I placed the order, I did post here asking about them but nobody had used them. The price was right so I figured that I would be the guinea pig. They did look really good! Built in soap cutter and it had a lid and everything. Boo-urns! I'll have to find somewhere else.

    Wooden Mold Woes

So, I had ordered that 3 pound wooden soap mold from soap-making-resource.com A few days had gone by and I didn't get a shipping confirmation, so I emailed. I got an email back today saying that they don't ship to Canada! It really sucks that the site let the order even go through, so...

    Separation?

The layer of oil is gone! However, the soap itself looks a little weird. there is little areas of the soap that are darker, like almost an orangey brown. I'm wondering if maybe the cocoa powder stained the oatmeal bits?

    Separation?

What a relief! I thought I had crapped it up for sure! I'll have to see how it looks in a few days. If it looks good I'll be a very happy camper. ((goes to check right now)) ACK still there. hehehe

    Separation?

If set up means that when I tilt the mold the rest of the soap doesn't move, then yes. If not, how do I tell if it is set up?

    Separation?

Okay so my second batch is down stairs in the molds. It hasn't been quite 24 hours yet. I just went to check on them and noticed a very tiny layer of what seems like oil resting on the tops of the bars in the mold. It's a very tiny layer, maybe one or two millimeters. I'm assuming that it's the...

    Argggghhh!! Waiting for the Lye

Ahh, gotcha! I hope I can find freezer paper. All I have right now is wax paper, and I don't want it melting. No-siree!

Second Batch! What do you think?

Yeah the stock pot that I have been using isn't that great for small batches. there ends up being maybe an inch of liquids at the bottom which makes it impossible for using the SB. i'm working on finding a thinner container to soap in but I haven't found anything yet. Would a juice pitcher work?

    Argggghhh!! Waiting for the Lye

That's what I know as butchers paper too. Almost like packaging paper but thinner. I bought wax paper yesterday to line the shelves where my soap will be curing.

Second Batch! What do you think?

Well the NBC suit is probably the weirdest thing. I bought it for when the Supervolcano explodes. The one under Yellowstone. Well that, and just so I could say that I have one hahaha.

Second Batch! What do you think?

haha that could be arranged! Unfortunatley the gas mask doesn't have the actual cartridge for it, just the rubber part, but I could totally bust it out and put it on and get the boyfriend to take a picture of me with some soap. I really look quite ridiculous in the suit lol. It's many sizes...

Second Batch! What do you think?

Seriously? A blender will work? Even if it's just a small amount? I thought of using the blender but didn't think it would work lol. Oh well, it's not too bad with a mortar and pestle. I just did it while i was watching some TV

    Oval crock pot

My mom has an enormous oval crock pot. I've never used it for soap, but that this is ultra heavy. It must weigh at least fifty pounds! I don't envy those of you who have to pour something out of it!

Second Batch! What do you think?

LOL i totally peeked... probably while you were typing this! My first batch seems alright. I half-mutilated it getting it out of the molds. i really don't like these plastic molds. I want my wood one right now! lol. So some of the fancy decoration parts of the mold... like a flower, half...

Second Batch! What do you think?

I grinded them up pretty good with a mortar and pestle (those things are so cool! and HEAVY) and I got it pretty ground up but there were still a few bigger bits in there. Next time I'll weight until a medium trace though. I just went and checked on it, and I'm excited that it looks like it's...

Okay I'm going to try it for sure!

Second Batch! What do you think?

Hehe, I also love saying my name :) I am totally going to use the stick blender next time I think. I'll have to gear up in like a space suit or something, but I'm doing it! I'm definitely putting all my oils in at the beginning next time. If something goes wrong with this soap, I think...

Second Batch! What do you think?

Hahaha. Well I do have goggles for mixing the lye, but I could totally use that mask!

Second Batch! What do you think?

I added one ounce per pound of fats. I've been using this site: http://www.colebrothers.com/soap/oils.html To figure out how much of each oil to use, and what percentages you can go up to for them. For grapeseed it says to add it at trace. You can add it at the beginning? What percentage...

Second Batch! What do you think?

That's what I used for the recipe :) Unfortunately I have a feeling that something went horribly, horribly wrong. I was whisking it, and I got a light trace. So I added the honey, oats (ground up with mortar and pestle), grapeseed oil and some cocoa powder for color. I mixed it all up and it...
