I've always had oily skin, right from teenage years, to now, late thirties.
I've always managed to control it, never having huge breakouts, just those pesky little annoying ones. I was always able to keep the zits at bay with the ocm and coconut soap.
Until November. I had the implant contraceptive placed in my arm. Hormones went crazy, don't know if I'm coming or going half the time, hot flushes through the roof....and my skin went feral. Massive breakouts Nothing was working. And I was miserable.
So I succumbed to the advertising, and a friends advice, and tried Proactiv. I've been using it for 4 weeks now, and the difference is amazing. I wish I bought it back in November when this started, I would have been so much happier. They have a money back guarantee so if you aren't happy you can take it back and they'll refund your money, but I'll be keeping mine.
So if you, or someone you know has persistant breakouts that aren't responsive to other methods give it a go.
By the way, just so you know i have NEVER bought anything off the tv before in my life.

LOL. Better living through chemicals :)

I got that stuff several years ago for my oldest son. It did wonders for clearing up his skin.

I know Deb, I was the same, that was why I never succumbed to the advertising, I swear they advertise 24/7 on the tv, and in every magazing, online new site...over here.
I'm just hoping that when I finish the bottle my skin doesn't go back to where it was...how did your son go with it? Is he still using it? Or did he stop and his skin stayed good, or did it backslide?

My husband had moderate breakouts in his early 20's and he tried Proactiv for about 2 years. It did clear up his skin pretty well, though he had a couple of small pimples most of the time while using it. After a while we decided to try something less expensive and just bought Neutrogena and it has worked equally well. He has been using it for about 2 years now and has no problems.

If you stop using it, your face may start breaking out again. I guess it depends on whether your hormones have settled down? If you really like it I would just stick with it!

I'm very interested in the implant! Did you keep it? Do you like it?

Norplant? Had mine when it was in trial, mmmm 19 yrs ago Couldn't stand it!!!!!!!!!!! Had it removed asap! Constant hormones, depressed, and continual spotting the whole yr they had me keep it for the trial. Hope its improved over the yrs.

Tasha, I'm not going to give the implant a rave review. Since I've had it in, I've been very hormonal, not just my skin, and I'm going to go back to the dr cos I have been getting a lot of spotting, and at times a full on regular period, but with pretty severe cramping and back pain, which I've never suffered before. It was also my understanding that it's pretty rare to get a period while it's in. So, because of that, I'm not 100% confident that it''s doing what it should be doing. I have had the depo provera injection before and had very similar symptoms with that, but weight gain as well. Of course, it reacts with everyone differently, I love the idea of it that it's in and you don't have to worry about it for 3 years, love love love that, but still not sold that it's the right option for me.

A friend mentioned it to me and the 3 year thing had me sold immediately. But I have always been sensitive to birth control... the hormones just make me feel like a different person. So I don't even know if I want to try it. Good to get your input though... Hopefully it will work for you still.

I was on the pill before, and I've tried a bunch of different ones. It's not that I forget to take it, I just don't like how I "feel" on it. Like you said, not like me. i also developed some skin pigmentation from the pill, which Ive since found out is fairly commong. I know it's getting the combination of the hormones right.
The implant is called "Implanon" over here, I'm not sure if there are different ones with different percentages of different hormones in them, or if it's a "one size fits all" approach. The 3 year thing is fab though!!
My dr said I should give it a good 6-12 months for the hormones to "stabilise" before I make a decision to have it removed, so I'll go with her advice. Apparently the implant is different hormones to the pill so works somehow differently in your body. It might not help that I think I am perimenopausal also, and have been for months.
