I meant to make a 75% olive oil 25% coconut oil soap last night, but I accidentally did it the other way around (wasn't really paying attention after my glass pyrex dish full of hot oils EXPLODED!!!! Yup!)

Anyway, I know coconut oil (esp. at 75%) can be drying. What should I use this soap for? Will it be good for washing dishes maybe? Can I just grate it and use it for laundry soap or something? I have a feeling it's going to be too harsh for me to use on my skin as I usually superfat my soaps and never go over 60% hard oils (I didn't superfat this one at all either).

Any ideas?

Here's what soapcalc says about it:

Hardness 63
Cleansing 50
Conditioning 28
Bubbly 50
Creamy 13
Iodine 28
INS 221 (through the roof!)

Did you use the oils from the pyrex bowl?

LOL, nope, they were all soaked into my carpet!! Lucky I was a few feet away when it happened. My (full) lye water jug was only about an inch away from the explosion. Lucky!

GOOD! I was having flashbacks from an unfortunate brownie batch my then 10-year-old made. Glass shard brownie. Adventures in baking!

My advice, if it was me? Toss it and start over. With Plastic!

I don't rebatch. The concept is wasted on me.
I'm inept at the process and unhappy with the results.

You may have much better luck. :D

Ashley, if it were me, I'd take a crack at a small batch of laundry soap. I make my own laundry soap and I'd never go back to the commercial brand...

Good Luck !!!

Yep I second the laundry soap motion. I would just grate it up, put it into a bucket and then cover with hot water. Stir it around a bit and then leave it and just come back and stir it up every now and then. Add more water if you want it more liquid. There have been lots of posts lately with really great laundry soap recipes! You can add borax if you want to. Personally I don't think you will need to, with that cleansing factor, and no superfat. You should have really really clean clothes. I have been making my own laundry detergent this way, and I definitely wouldn't go back to commercial detergents. I really like the way homemade soap/laundry liquid makes my sheets/linens and towels smell!

Me Three - I think this is a great opportunity to try your own laundry soap....that's on my project list somewhere.......

That really depends on your skin type and how much you superfatted. I have a Mariner's bar that is 100% CO with only a 5% superfat and it's fine for ME, and I really like it. Now other's have said it is drying, but I would at least TRY a bar before making a decision. Then you can use it for stain sticks and laundry detergent, or dilute it down and use it as an all-purpose cleaner like a 409 or something...

The first soap i ever tired to rebatch was some plain glycerine soap from whole foods (it was very cheap). Why anyone would ever put that on their body, just from grating and washing my hands i felt like a layer of skin had been ripped off! But that stuff works wonders for cleaning kitchen grime. And its pure coconut.

If making your own laundry soap how much do you put in the wash, the usual cup measure (like a 1/4 cup)? I have been using Bronner's sal's suds which works great.

Which lye calculation did you use? If you used your 75% OO one then you have about a 15% superfat/lye discount in your actual soap and you may very well be in great shape - I often soap with 75% coconut oil.

If you use the lye calc for 75% coconut oil then what superfat did you use?

And most importantly, was your lye calc off???

I didn't superfat at all. I used soapcalc for my lye amount so I'm assuming it was okay.

With the shreds that you cover with water and stir up, start with about 1/4 cup and see if your water feels slick. Add from there until you have a "slickery" feeling. That means you've broken the surface tension of the water and the soap is going to clean.

If you have hard water, use 1/2 cup borax or washing soda, and dissolve it in the machine and get it thoroughly mixed before adding soap. Otherwise you're going to get scum and dingy clothes.

If you reversed the amounts, your lye calc will be off because you used way more coconut than you did olive. Different SAP values.....you actually probably do have a bit of superfat in there, but make sure it doesn't zap.

the default superfat for soapcalc is 5% (same thing as lye discount).

Which recipe did you base your lye calculation on?
75% olive/25% coconut or 75% coconut/25% oil?

I used the proper lye amount.... I typed 75% CO and 25% OO in soapcalc. Dummy!! <--- (me)

yep, then drying it'll be. I don't know that it's suitable for laundry - I use only 0% SF soap for laundry.

I would shred it.....and put it in a large container.

Add water to cover, and a spoonful of lye. That should take care of any superfatting.

Allow to dissolve, stir it up, and use about 1/4 - 1/2 cup per washload. :)
