I hear ya! I wanted to know what all the hoopla was about so I got the DVDs of all 7 seasons from the library. Fell hopelessly in love with the series, although I could do without the White Walkers. I have my fingers crossed that my 6 faves make it to the end... including "the girl".

Shhh.... I'm still reading the 4th book...
You're so smart! I wish I had read the books before watching the DVDs. I've heard the story line is really good. How many books are there? (There's always next Winter! heh, heh, heh

I read all 5 of the books in this series that he has published so far and loved the series. I enjoyed that the HBO series followed the books (fairly well) for as long as it could, but it went as far as it could and the books didn't come out as fast enough to keep up. So eventually there is no real co-relation between the books and the TV series. But as with most film renditions of a good book or series of books, that's the way it goes. Although they say that it won't end so much different from the books, I find that hard to reconcile to what I have seen so far.

Thanks, Earlene! BTW, On 60 Minutes last Sunday, Anderson Cooper interviewed the author. He didn't get the 2 books he promised done in time for the final Season so the playwrights wrote the script. Interesting interview. Anderson got made up as a White Walker (took 4 hours!) and played at the Winterfell set in Northern Ireland with Kit Harrington (Jon Snow). It was a very entertaining segment:

Oooh, thanks for the info @earlene Now I know there's a point where I can start watching that won't spoil the books for me. Probably after I finish the 4th. I'm sure I'll watch the show much faster than I read the books. It usually takes me 6 months to read one book, so I've been trying to get through them for years now. [side note: I usually have two books going at once, so that probably doesn't help my speed as I'll put down GOT to read something else all the way through.] I had read somewhere that there was some name changes for clarity - which I get because when I read I usually have GOT Wiki open to help me remember who is who as some of the names are similar. There's a podcast called Three Ravens that is discussing the last season as it airs. It's a local guy (to me), so I'm following along with that just because I know these people. It's probably spoiled more for me than if I had just started watching the series.

I could do without the White Walkers.
LOL The White Walkers are the whole point of the entire series!

5 books, but there are supposed to be 7.
The HBO series surpassed the books at season 6. They are both GREAT in their own right, however, the books, of course, are better, but they are very very different than the series. The first book and first season follow along relatively closely, and then they diverge greatly. IF you can get over that, then you will enjoy both. If not, you will hate one or the other. I just look at them as 2 different entities within the same setting.

I enjoyed that the HBO series followed the books (fairly well) for as long as it could,
I didn't think that at all. To me they are completely different. Different characters doing different things, name changes (Yara vs. Asha for example) things happening in the show that never ever happened in the book (Ros for example) -
You could really tell the difference after about mid season 5 when GRRM was no longer as heavily involved in the shows as he was in the beginning.

I'm sure I'll watch the show much faster than I read the books.
Those books are LONG - and when he goes on for paragraph after paragraph about how food looks, it makes it even longer!! LOL

I'm an avid fan and love both the books and show, but as said, I have to view them as 2 entirely separate entities, or I get angry. LOL

I suppose you are right, and it wasn't as long as I thought, but I suppose since it was quite a time difference between reading the books and watching the series that I forgot about some of the divergence. But I have come to accept the differences of film and books so much that I just don't expect much of it anymore.

I do read a lot and often don't recall all the details even when/if ( re-read the same book). Unless I read the book right along with the series, I probably would not really notice any but the huge differences, particularly if it wasn't fresh in my mind. And I hate reading a book series at the same time as watching a film of the same storyline because they so rarely satisfy when doing it that way.

Absolutely agree. There were a lot of differences as the show wore on. Loads of them, the longer it has been in production, but I always expect that with film versions.

You should have heard my brothers and I critique the Jack Reacher film even before it was made when we learned who was going to play the role. It was extremely disappointing. GOT, the TV series has not been in the least disappointing to me. I do believe they have done a wonderful job instilling the characters within the framework of George R.R. Martin.

An additional thing I loved about the films was that the DVDs included interviews with the author and cast and production staff that were so informative and greatly enhanced my enjoyment of the series. I watched it all on DVD, as we don't get HBO. One of these days I will borrow them from the library again and catch up on the past seasons in preparation for the final season.

I'll have to do the same with the books, when the new volumes come out.
