Why is mineral oil different to other oils that are used to make soap?
Baby oil is made out of mineral oil, as are some other massage oils. I also read on a packet of store baby soap that it had mineral oil listed on it's ingredients. I didn't think that baby oil would saponify? If not, do you think they used the mineral oil in the baby soap to superfat, and that's why they can call it baby soap because most store bought soap isn't superfatted at all???Does anyone know the answer to this? And do you think I could make soap out of baby oil? I have a girlfriend who is pregnant and I would like to make some baby soap. Thanks in advance for all the knowledgeable answers that you will all have!! :?

The best "baby" soap would be a castile---olive oil only. It takes a while to get hard, but it is very gentile. There are several variations to a basic castile which can be very nice too. Mineral oil does not saponify, as it is made from petrolium by products.

thankyou Paul, that is the explanation that I wanted.
I knew that mineral oil wouldn't saponify but I didn't know why, so you answered that for me.
I thought that a plain castille would be good for baby soap. I will do that!!
Thanks :)
