i was thinking of selling my vegan soaps in a local natural foods market. i approached a seller and they asked what pricing structure i could offer them. what is a typical profit margin a retailer might expect? 40% above cost? she also wanted to know if i had upc labels on the product. i do not now, as i've never done wholesale before. where is the best place to get these.....it looks like they can be pricy.....

The standard mark up from wholesale to retail is 2x. If you buy it for $2.00, you sell it for $4.00. I have been a buyer for many shops, I have both purchased & sold at the world trade center, etc, etc. It is standard. Is it a law, no. Will people pop in & say otherwise, yes, but 98% of retail shops do a 2x markup. If you pay extra to have the items shipped, you will have to take that into account.

May "bigtime" companies even require an exactly 2x markup & may even have the retail price preprinted on the package to prevent market fluxuation. Some high end brands (crystal, silver, etc) will make yo sign a ciontract that you will sell at exactly a 2x markup.
