I'm in Winnipeg, Manitoba (Canada) and I don't have enough to make an online order worth while to pay shipping. The only supplier in my area (that I know of) is selling Shea and Cocoa butter for a steep price. I was wondering, would African stores (grocery and other) carry refined and natural shea and cocoa? I have not looked into this. If someone knows the answer for my particular area, great, if not in your area do you see these products in those type of stores?

I just really want to know if I'm totally off base with wondering this or should I start making some phone calls and finding this out. I hate phoning or going in and asking, and having people look at me like I'm and idiot. :p

Any help is appreciated!

If you go back in here, a while back, Genny posted a link to African shea butter, not sure about your area, you might have to do a search - I haven't time at the moment.

yes, African stores or Rasta stores should carry shea, and possibly cocoa butter. I was able to find raw shea butter from a Rasta store in Kensington Market area in Toronto.

If you just want a small amount, Queen Helene brand sells a stick of 100% cocoa butter. It's not a good price at all, about $2 for one ounce. But if you just want a little to play with, that might be the way to go.

Another way might be to ask the owner of a local healthfood store if they could order some in for you. Again, probably won't be the best price.

If you have a lot of farmer markets in your area you may find an African good importer and many times they can get the shea or already have it. I get my raw shea from a Farmer market buddy whom has a friend that imports it in. Usually they are 25 blocks, but sometimes they come in the husk container and can contain more, but I hate dealing with the husk

If you have dollar stores, they sometimes carry cocoa butter in stick form. Not a great price but if you only need a little, it's worth it.
