where to find a good lemon fragrance.

Hi, I am new to soap making- have made about 6 batches so far and am -HOOKED. I am wondering if you can use Lemon extract (from the grocery store) to fragrance lemon soap .???I can't seem to find a good lemon fragrance. also, has anyone tried using unsweetened yellow Koolaid to color lemon soap.?? thanks-- Sheryl

I'm sorry I don't know where you can find the best lemon fragrance oil. I doubt the scent from lemon extract would make it through the saponification and I think the Kool-aid would fade. However, you could always try it as an experiment.

Extract is alcohol-based, it will not play nicely with your soap. I'd not use it. I like AHRE's lemon verbena fragrance oil. It smells like a nice bright lemon drop and it sticks in CP soap. For EO, NDA's folded (5x) lemon is wonderful. You could also try lemongrass EO or litsea cubeba EO, both of which should be easy to obtain (if costly) at local health food stores.

Don't know about the Kool Aid - I'm dubious. You can get a nice yellow with a little bit of virgin palm oil (although it will fade over time) or by infusing annatto seeds in olive oil. Your best bet for yellow color is probably a mica colorant.

For the money, you absolutely cannot beat Essential Depot's Lemon Blossom fragrance oil. Its $5 for four ounces, has a juicy lemon-head, fresh-off-the-tree lemon sort of scent that really sticks in CP soap. It also behaves really well and doesn't discolor, etc. It's one of my most popular fragrances among friends and family, and makes your shower smell like you are bathing in fresh squeezed lemonade.

Oh gor, I hate that one. Smells, to me, like dish liquid.
