Ive been making soap for quite a while now, Ive made a bunch of lip balm but never lotion. Ive found a bunch of recipes online and I cant decide which one to try first. I also would like to try making goats milk lotion but cant find a good recipe for that. Any suggestions would be helpful..

Heres one I found....
1 1/4 cup hot water
1/4 cup emulsifying wax
1/4 cup olive oil
24-36 drops essential oil

Another one I thought about trying...
1 cup aloe vera gel
1 tsp. shea butter (original recipe calls for lanolin)
1 tsp. vitamin E oil
1/3 cup of coconut oil
3/4 oz. of beeswax
3/4 cup of almond oil
1 tsp. essential oil of any fragrance

I dont want it to spoil though, so shouldnt I put preservative? how much and what?

Good catch - your first clue that a formula is not done correctly is the absence of preservative.

Secondly, any formula that is measured in teaspoons is highly suspect. Properly done, it will be by weight or presented in percentages which are based on weight.

Try Snowdrift Farms - they have many formulas.

Agreed - you will find good recipes for lotions and such at a lot of the supplier sites including some with great instructions. I would never use a recipe that was created using cups and teaspoons rather than ounces/grams.

Have you tried looking through the Bath & Body forum? Lindy posted a lotion recipe and here's the link. It would make a good starting point for you to develop your own recipe.

If you haven't made lotions before, you might want to read through the different threads about making lotions for advice. Also, Susan Barclay-Nichols blog is excellent for anyone who's interested in lotion making. She discusses the properties of different oils and additives plus there's some recipes.

I would convert that to ozs. so you will get the same results each and very time. With that said, neither recipe looks good to me. Beeswax will make the lotion draggy and since there is no emulsifier in there, it will separate over time. Preservative is a must. Read up on preservative to see which one would work the best with these ingredients.

Thank you...I still havent found a good starting recipe..I keep looking but just dont know where to start...Does anyone know a recipe for goats milk lotion? I cant even find one for that...

Any lotion recipe can be made with goat's milk in place of some of the liquid. I haven't used GM but I've heard that you don't want more than 12% of it in your lotion because then the preservative may not be effective.

Hopefully, someone who's made GM lotion will correct me if I'm wrong about the amount.

I personally don't go above 10% of milk in lotion as any higher then that taxes my preservative past its limit.

LOL.

tho I suspect that there are folks who do inch above that 10%, it's a decent rule of thumb.

I think I've seen this recipe before. is this one from the lady that tells you to put all that in a glass jar and shake it?

As mentioned above, swiftcraftymonkey has really good information. My first recipe was really nice combination of oils actually, but the batch was a total disaster because I did not have good info on how to make it. Check out the lotion making tutorial in the downloadable PDFs on swifts site. She will give a basic recipe to get you started and you can go from there. Her site has lots of recipes. I also like the formula section of the herbarie.

It's this: http://www.sonomanews.com/News-2011/How ... nd-lotion/

No preservative, which is BAD, and no mention of distilled or at least boiled water. And since the emulsion is not really formed through proper mixing it's unlikely to be stable.

It disturbs me that this is published as though it were done by someone knowledgeable. Unfortunately, your basic crafter wouldn't know! But...

Hi Decinces- The shelf life on this is at least three months, that’s the longest I’ve had it last. And no it doesn’t need to be refridgerated. I keep mine on my bathroom counter. I’ve never thought about germs and bacteria growing in it. I never think about it with commercial lotion either though. I go through this lotion quickly and have never noticed any strange things growing in it :) If you are worried about it, try putting one or two drops of tea tree oil in it- it has antibacterial and anti fungal properties. I hope you try it!

lol.
just kidding... everyone please use preservatives. :D
