So i made some spur of the moment soap a while ago, milk soap , for the first time.

I used some whole, pastured cow milk we had laying about with a recipe vastly different from my usual. I have it written down somewhere but it was something like 60% palm, 25% soy and then some castor and coconut oil.

I used the freeze method and stirred that sucker for ages to make sure all the lye was fully dissolved, the milk stayed a nice creamy white, although it was slightly thicker than typical milk.

I soaped on the room temp side with my oils so they weren't too much hotter than my milk. The entire thing accelerated, reaching medium trace in about 10 seconds of blending then thick trace while i poured. Waited a few days, cut it and was thrilled with how it looked, and lathered (it wasnt zappy so i tried a tiny scrap out <,<).

Thing is now, two days after cutting it has little (maybe 1-2 mm each) brownish dots appearing in it.

My thought is its either DoS or maybe tiny fragments of caramelized sugar from the milk?

I would include a picture, but the dots are so tiny thus far that they dont really show up on my camera.

(note: All the oils i used are getting on a year old, which is why i used such a strange recipe. Trying to use up what i have before it turns. It all smells and looks as it did they day i bought them)

Did you scent it? DOS doesn't happen in two days so I would guess its either FO that didn't get mixed in well enough or its bits of scorched milk.

I did scent it with BBs oatmeal milk and honey , whisked it in after it was at a medium trace. It actually relaxed the soap a bit so it THINK i was able to get it all in there, its never been a problematic FO for me before.

I did some digging in my scrap pieces and the dots seem solid as opposed to liquid. I'm a recovering soap licker so i even licked the dots directly, no zap just like he rest of the soap. It almost looks like i put loofah in this batch...which i didnt for once, lol.

A picture would really help. DOS tends to be more orange than brown. Usually, at least in my experience, there tend to be one or two to several per bar of soap. They grow larger over time, and they have a definite "off" smell to them. Like rancid oil. They usually take longer than two days to show up, so hopefully, it's not DOS you're dealing with.

Borrowed the BFs phone for better resolution.

Thats doesn't look like DOS at all. I'm sticking with it being the FO. Its easy enough to not get it all mixed in, especially if its thick batter and you do it by hand.
I wouldn't worry about it at all. Pretty soap by the way:)

Thanks ^.^'. I guess i got myself sort of worked up. I've only been soaping for about two years, but today some acquaintances asked if they could buy some. I've only ever used it myself or given it to friends and family...the thought that someone wanted my soap outside of that circle was a shock...and then of course i go and mess up the batch that caught their eye, lol.

Did you use a vanilla stabilizer or TD? I've noticed that the few times I tried one of these on a heavier vanilla % soap, I ended up with spots that could be similar to this (can't see pic real well). They were basically little dots all over from the fragrance vanilla trying to push through. lol

I actually did use TD dispersed in a small amount of water for the lighter part. The specks do seem to be in both parts, but the lighter seems to have it worse...hmm

I had something similar happen with adding honey. I usually add it to my lye water, but I decided to add it to the warm oils instead. Looked totally incorporated but then it obviously wasn't once the bars were cut because I had brownish dots and streaks. Still a good soap but not the look i wanted! LOL. And I had made the recipe before several times so it was frustrating.

But lesson learned. What if you add the FO to the warm oils? I've heard that slows the accelerated trace a bit. I don't use FOs, so I can't speak from experience but perhaps someone else will chime in.
