What's going on in the Oven??

What's the deal with the oven? Why do you put your soap in there? Does it make it cure faster? How exactly is it done? Does it take away some of the scent? I'm interested but unsure of this process. I have just been putting my CP in the mold and covering it with plastic wrap and a towel and havn't had any problems. Not sure if I should mess with a good thing, but we all like to try new things!!!!!

I don't do CP but I think putting it in the oven speeds things up.

I only do crock hp now, but I do believe the oven will speed things up for curing time. I dont know about the scent issue, good question.

Ok oven cookers. How long do you put it in there for? At what temp??

i'm totally unsure of the temps. i've read anywhere from just the heat from the light, to an oven warmed at 200.

I've just noticed people talking about it lately, myself. took me a while to figure out CPOP meant cold process oven process. doesn't seem cold process to me, if you put it in the hot oven lol.

i had wondered about the scent issue, myself. some oils have flashpoints that are pretty low, but the gelling temps seem like they get above that point, anyway.

We put soap in the oven to force gel. You can do the same with other heat sources such as a heating pad. You can allow the heat of the reaction to heat up the soap enough to gel as well - you may need to insulate/wrap your soaps to accomplish this.

Does it speed things up? Well if you are doing CP then it only speeds up reaching gel - and gelled vs ungelled soap often comes out of the mold sooner.

Some also HP in the oven.

CPOP is actually "cold pour oven process" tho some also say "cold process oven process". Either way, you pour it into the mold and then stick it in the oven. It's really HPing in the mold, but without the stirring and boiling that would muck up swirls and such. Also known as ITMHP (in the mold hot process).

CPHP is crock pot hot process. This is when you throw it all in the pot of your crockpot.

and flash points are NOT the same as the temp at which stuff evaporates. it's the temp at which fumes can be ignited with an open flame.

water evaporates at a much lower temperature than the temp at which it becomes flammable LOL.

flash points are relevant for shipping - there are regulations about how different flash point materials can be shipped. also the fire department finds that stuff interesting. they are important if you are heating your FO on a gas stove, or if you are using straight in a "melter" over a tea light.

BUT flash points change when the FO is mixed with another oil. Flash point of an FO might be 160, but when you mix it with your soaping oils which have a flash point of (for example) 350, that itty bitty bit of FO doesn't really have much impact and the flash point of your mix is close to that 350 (for example).

I do CPOP , turn the oven to 170 and pop the soap in , set the timer for an hour , turn oven off and leave the soap in it overnight . I haven't had partial gel troubles doing it this way .Make sure your mold is okay to put in the oven.
