What to do this is expensive

Im new to soap making but I LOVE it. Its not cheap either. I want to make as much as possible and learn to make artsy soap.

Whats the cheapest recipe for making soap when you want to learn swirls and other techniques?

I would say the store brand Vegetable Shortening along with a little coconut oil.

I think someone on here said they'd practice swirls using boxed cake mix and food coloring. They got to practice their swirls and their family got dessert.
