This may seem like a dumb question but I just can't seem to find the answer. How do you know what size mold to use? I know that it depends upon the recipe, but I'm looking at a basic recipe and moving on from there. I just bought a 2lb loaf mold. I'm hoping that that is an average. Clearly I am new to this!:?:

you'll want to resize each recipe you come across to your mold until you are able to have a variety of different sized molds. You will use soap calc to re-calculate your recipes. I just learned this last week with the help of others here, so i will share with you. You need to first determine how many ounces your mold holds. SO take the inner diameter length, times width, times depth, times .40. that will give you cubic ounces basically. You then go to the soap calc web page and on step two you will select ounces, then enter the number you came up with. Make sure that on step 6 (Or is it 8, it looks confusing) that you have % selected (it wont let you recalc a recipe based on ounces here). you will also need to know the percentages of all your oils used to do this. It takes someone smarter than me to convert ounces to percentages...... good luck and hope this helped.

I don't make soap to sell, so a 2-lb mold is a good size for me most of the time. Even if I'm going to make a bigger batch in my 5-lb mold, I test it in my 2-lb mold first. Also, I like the smaller mold because I like to experiment with colors and fragrances, and I can make soap more often, since I'm not using up all my ingredients.
