I have heard a number of different percentages. Some books and links I have read say do not exceed 5% while others say up to 15%. What would the best percentage be without hindering the smell or softness? I like the bubbles and creaminess, but also want a fragrant, hard bar.

I've been using 10% so far, but I don't know any better since I'm just new and following recipes written by others!

I have gone up to 20%, but the bars are kind of sticky when wet. I do 15% now and find it's a good balance.

Huh, well that explains what went wrong with my last soap recipe-- I used over 20% (can't remember where I got the recipe from) and it was so sticky I could hardly get it out of the greased mold. Also, the soap feels a bit slimy and disintegrates very quickly when felted!

Thanks for asking the question :)

I figured it was the castor, now I know for sure...

I use anywhere from 5% to 23%, depending on my formula. My soap with 23% castor, for instance, has 65% tallow in it, which makes stickiness a non-issue in that particular soap. If I were to use it at that high of a % in any of my other formulas, it would be pretty sticky, I'm sure.

IrishLass :)

Oooh, tell me about the tallow/castor soap, Irishlass! what does it feel like? How is the lather? I love using tallow! Why did you choose it over coconut oil?
