Another interesting point: I took a bunch of scraps from planing and beveling a number of batches and re-batched them all together. I don't like seeing them go to waste! I added a little bit of shea butter at the end of the re-batch, and quite a few weeks later, they have the dusty coating, too. Those scraps were from batches that were MONTHS old.
This makes me think it's not "regular" ash, although it might be something ash-like. I might try mixing my solid butter with a liquid oil when I'm superfatting to see if that helps.
