I will be doing my fourth batch of soap in a little while. What I am wondering is what FO's will make it through the HP process? I have been cooking my soap until it gels and then turning my crock pot off so it can cool a bit before I add my FO. It seems to be holding somewhat, but I thought maybe there's a trick to better fragrance that I don't know about. I like the HP way of soaping because I'm always dying to see and try the finished product. I'm sure at some point I'll do CP again too. I'm hoping that Mary_White will reply, since I saw that she has been doing HP for some time.

Skatergirl, not MaryWhite but I have done 2 HP batches and haven't had any issues with adding the FO after it cools down (lower than the flash point of the FO). Are yours fading? Have you tried using more? Or you just don't like how the smell of the FO turned out? What brand of FO are you using?

Not Mary White either, but a little clay in the recipe will help anchor the scent. As for my favorite scents, I try different fragrances and essential oil combinations with most every batch. I am mostly a hobbyist so I get to play around with my recipes. Here are some of my new favorites:
Favorite fragrance oils:
Oakmoss and Sandalwood from Wholesale Supplies Plus
Yuzu from Wholesale Supplies Plus or Southern Gardens

Essential Oil Blends:
Lemongrass and Sage
Sweet Orange and Cedarwood
Vanilla F.O. and Lavender E.O.

My scents have been ok. I followed the manufacturer's recommendation for one of them, (Nature's Oil Plumeria). They claimed that it is very strong and should be used at .3 ppo. IMO that wasn't enough. The scent was there but not as much as I would like. I'll try it again and use more.

I was asking because of the FP of some of the FO's is fairly low and I was concerned that they wouldn't hold with the temperature of HP.

Thank you! I'll try some clay in my next batch also. Going to make a batch today with Orange EO.

Flashpoint doesn't have anything to do with scent retention - it has to do with at what temp will the fumes burst into flame when exposed to a spark or open flame. I make HP all the time, and I don't let my soap cool down before adding the FO or EO to it. Not a single one of my HP soaps have lost any scent. Now, I'm not saying that the exposure to heat may not change the scent or if its a delicate fragrance, it might or might not take a note or two out - but I'm lucky in that my nose doesn't detect all the notes LOL But I've not lost scent in any of my FOs in HP, and I often using FOs and EOs with FP in the 110-130 range and my soap is around 160 or so when I add it in.

I suggest buying folded orange EO unless you're going to blend with a base note like patch or something similar. Clay seems to be sort of hit or miss to help with scent retention.

Good to know, thanks. I was thinking that the heat would somehow degrade the FO. I have ordered some folded orange EO.
