I only used distilled water. You can buy it at walmart for less than a dollar a gallon.

For some people tap water works, others use filtered water, and for some it can be a big problem. If you have hard water (or if you use mineral or spring water) there can be other things in it, minerals and metals and such that may or may not react with the lye and affect your soap. For me, it's a cheap and easy solution to just buy distilled.

I use distilled water, but some people use tap water. Our tap water is so hard that distilled works better for me.

ahh thanks we live in a soft water area so might give it a go
I've been buying lidl spring water not mineral water i think it's 28p a bottle - if not it's very cheap but i'm going to try tap water on my next batch i think it might be worth a go.

I use tap water. We run a water softener so I know there is at least a little salt in it, but I have not had any problems. I have used distilled water and softened water that went through a reverse osmosis filter also. I have never seen any difference with the different waters.

I use filtered water for bar soap and my utility grade liquid soap.

I use distilled water for my bath grade liquid soap. Filtered tap water makes it cloudy.

If I was trying to make a transparent solid soap I would use distilled water. Otherwise it does not really matter, at least with my tap water (a little hard but not too bad).

I live on the side of a mountain and we have really hard water. I use tap water and I don't have any problems with my soap. For lotions I boil the water to sterilize it. Sometimes for my soaps I use salt water from the strait that I live on....

There are going to be good reasons behind everyone's choice but my attitude is that it is soap - soap kills biologicals, bacteria, mold, etc. Just my take on it.

I have noticed that I get more ash when I use tap water as opposed to using distilled water. I have tested using the same fragrances and recipes and tap always causes ash to form moreso than distilled. Other than that I haven't noticed any difference in the soap quality between the 2 waters.

well i've been on a soap marathon this week as i'm making all my batches for christmas this week so far no noticable differences with tap water will see in 4 weeks time! :0)

I use tap water. We have a well and we do not have hard water. We also have our water tested regularly. I rarely get ash on my soaps.
