I went ahead and tried making a lotion tonight without any stearic acid or cetyl alcohol (thickeners which the recipe called for) and yes, the lotion is quite thin. If I reduced my water percentage at the beginning, would I no longer need a thickener like those?

Tasha I don't use stearic in my lotions and my water % is between 65 - 70. You need a minimum of 5% EWax. If you add butters it will also help to thicken the lotion. Keep in mind that it can take up to 48 hours for your lotion to fully set up and I have seen a thin balm take 72 hours.
